You know how it’s great to know an accountant during tax time, a personal trainer when you’re trying to lose weight or a stockbroker when you’re looking to invest? Having an expert at your fingers tips to give you insider tips is awesome. And I’m here for you. Not as a gardening expert today, but rather an Amazon expert.
I feel that the sheer number of purchases I make on Amazon each year totally qualifies me as an expert. So I’m here today to share one of my very favorite Amazon expert tips: Amazon price adjustments.
Have you ever bought something on Amazon only to see the very same item drop in price the next day? It’s so frustrating knowing if you would have held out to buy it, you could have saved some cold hard cash. Well Amazon is so awesome, they’ll refund you the price difference if you ask. No, seriously.
Now before I let you in on this rarely known secret, there are a few things you should know.
1. This is not a formal Amazon policy, so your experience might be different than mine.
2. I’ve personally done this multiple times and it’s worked.
3. I’ve only ever tried it with items shipped from Amazon, so it might not work when you make purchases from an outside seller.
4. I’ve only ever received a price adjustment in the 1st week after buying, so I’m not sure how long they will honor it.
5. It doesn’t hurt to ask.
1. Scroll to the bottom of the Amazon homepage and click on the “help” button, which will take you to the Amazon help page.
2. Click on the yellow “Contact Us” button on the right hand side of the page.
3. Sign into your Amazon account.
4. Click on the “An order I placed” tab and find the purchase you’re requesting the refund on.
5. Under the “Tell us more about your issue” section, select “Payment issue” from the 1st drop down menu and “Price change on website” from the 2nd.
6. Select how you would like to contact them: email, phone or live chat. I always use live chat because it’s easy and fast.
7. Then simply explain the item you bought dropped in price, and you’d like a refund for the difference.
8. Amazon refunds your money. Wallah!
Like I said, it might not work every time, but it’s certainly worth a shot. Let me know if you ever try it and if it works for you.

I did the same thing with LL Bean. I ordered some cozy flannel sheets during the week and they went on sale the following weekend. I called customer service and explained what happened and they happily made the price adjustment. It never hurts to ask, they want happy customers!

Target offers price adjustments too. I don’t know about target.com, but the stores do it for up to two weeks I believe.

Wow, I can’t tell you how timely this was! I ordered a pair of shoes and they came yesterday. I looked on their website and they had gone down by almost $5. I just went through all your steps and got my $4.91 refunded! Awesome!

I bought some formula last month and before it was even delivered the price had dropped a ton. They refunded me the difference and saved me almost $30! When you are buying for twins every dollar makes a difference! I love Amazon!

Amazon has even gone so far as to give me my item for FREE when I asked for a price adjustment. It’s happened twice (both items were under $10) and so, yes, it never hurts to ask! ๐

Yep, Amazon honored a $30 drop in price on a DVD set for me last Christmas. The live chat was quick and I had my refund in the form of a credit to my Amazon account.

This also worked for me. I made a purchase last week before Thanksgiving and with today being “cyber” Monday my item was $30 cheaper. I sent an online chat request as suggested above and I should have my refund within 3-4 business days. Thank you for posting this online. Just saved me $30 on an item that was already on sale when I purchased it!!!!

I bought a Kids Kindle 5 days ago and got it over the weekend. A friend was just shopping for one and said wow… only $119? I was shocked! I paid $149! I got onto chat with customer service and they agreed to refund the difference. Just took a couple o of minutes!

Awesome. Way to go Cheryl! ๐

Interestingly enough, I did this last year on a kindle paperwhite and they happily refunded the difference even though it had been more than 7 days. In the chat, they told me that the policy was only 7 days but she would give me the refund anyway. Fast forward to today…I bought another paperwhite for a christmas gift 3 days ago for $119. The price today is $99. I figured it was refund time and hopped on another chat. This time, she told me that they don’t do refunds for price drops and she had no access to anything other than returns. I told her I had done it before but got nowhere. The best she could do is an advanced refund to return the first one and I could buy it again. I even suggested doing the return and simply not shipping the second one since the first one isn’t even here yet. She couldn’t do it. So I will get one tomorrow, slap a label on it and put it back in the mail, and keep the one that arrives the day after. Strange way to get $20 back, but oh well.

Thanks for this article, i got a $74 refund from amazon. I was browsing amazon today when I noticed a huge price difference of an item I purchased 43 days ago. Im one happy mom.
kenny rhee says
Are you serious, 45 days ago!?!?!
Carmen says
Amazon has the best customer service around, but I don’t think people should abuse their leniency too much lol. Like, seriously, things eventually get cheaper or go on sale sometime after you buy the item so it isn’t fair to ask for a price adjustment too many days after you purchased the item. It doesn’t hurt to ask, but don’t be surprised and scream at them if they say “no” because you purchased the item 2 months ago…
Aileen says
The item I bought from Amazon doesn’t usually go on sale over $50. It’s a high rated carseat fyi. No harm in trying esp. it was the first time I asked for a price difference.
Aileen says
no kidding. and its 43 days after not 45.
Zoe says
I tried doing this today, but wasn’t able to because the item was not sold by Amazon. However, it was fulfilled by Amazon. Can anyone else confirm this policy?
Sharon says
Also, if you are a Prime member and order something with 2-day shipping and the item does not come in 2 days, if you call and ask, they will extend your Prime membership by one month. I love Amazon!
Jane says
You can also contact Amazon when you do not receive your item when it was supposed to arrive. I just did and was given the option of either $5.00 refund or an extra month of prime!
