Blech.
When The Girl and I went to pick up the produce boxes a few days ago all I could see were heaps of lettuce trimmings. The good thing was, chickens love lettuce. The not so good thing, I really have no use for 4 boxes of lettuce leaves.
This week we were able to salvage:
- 1 apple to snack on
- carrots, broccoli, bok choy and 1 piece of cauliflower for stir fry
- 5 ears of corn
- 8 beets
Oh well, some weeks are better than others I suppose. Every week can’t be filled with boxes and boxes of strawberries and melons. Beggars can be choosers. LOL
Last night we had grilled salmon, roasted beets and rice.
So hey, life is good.
So how have YOU been scoring on your reclaimed food boxes lately? Have you been hitting home runs? Or striking out?

I have been doing this for five years. I have a friend who goes through it all in the back yard when he is here. He takes home immense boxes for himself, sorts for me, and some or hens. Plus, there is the compost pile. The best part for the hens is the ends or corn cobs with bits of corn, green anything, and cantaloupe. I never buy chicken feed.
Mavis says
Really? You never buy chicken feed? I’m impressed! 🙂

Striking out just getting produce. All the stores about here are too concerned with being sued. It’s just plain discouraging.

Sorry to see your small haul, Mavis. Maybe it is the universe compensating for the insane hauls you are getting right now in the garden!?
This week I went back to my usual pickup time and it was back to normal. I was super lazy and left everything on the table yesterday, just went through it tonight. Ended up with:
~1 whole watermelon
1lb cherries
1lb strawberries
1lb green grapes
2 red bell peppers
1 large leek
1 bunch parsley
1 white and 1 orange cauliflower
small bunch of broccolini
9 ears corn
~3lbs of green beans
1 cucumber

Too bad you had to use some of that fabulous salmon your dh brought home. Did you roast your beets?
Mavis says
Yep, I roasted them on the grill.

I just asked the kid in the produce department what they did with their produce that doesn’t sell as he was pulling an entire display of bananas (not even with brown spots, they just got a new shipment in). He told me to go ahead and call back int he morning and talk to the owner because they do save it for one other person, but their not very consistant in picking it up (locally owned store). He then told me to meet him out back and he loaded up my car with half a cartload of bananas, the other manager told me it was okay to give those to me for today since they were just going to toss them anyway. Guess I’d better plug in my other freezer!

*told him it was okay to give those to me

I called my local grocery store today, waiting on a call back… this sounds like I might need more jars/another freezer if it works out!
