This week when I went to pick up the “chicken scraps” I was a bit relieved. For the first time in a long while the boxes were not stuffed with mounds and mounds of lettuce leaves. There were a few heads of iceberg lettuce this time around, but they were not salvageable.
However, there was an ample supply of watermelon, cantaloupe, grapes and strawberries to fill our refrigerator with. Plus, I was able to divide up the remaining scraps in to 3 boxes to feed not only our chickens, but Girly Girls and another friends as well.
This whole picking up free scraps gig is pretty sweet. I only wish more stores would let people pick up their discards. From reading your comments over the past few months, finding a local store that will give you their scraps seems to be pretty hit an miss.
All I can say is this, keep trying.
If you’ve asked the grocery stores and had no luck, try a local farm stand or the local farmer’s market at closing. Who knows. You may just get lucky.

I’m headed outside to get a little work done in the garden before it starts to heat up. It’s suppose to be 80 degrees here in the Seattle area. I hope I don’t get heatstroke.

LoL. It has been close to 100 degress where i live, too. 80 degrees sounds perfect. I need to move to Seattle.

For sure Michelle. I went for my walk at 5:45 this am and it was already in the 90’s. Supposed to be 108 today. But I love hardly any snow and no jackets in January.

Seattle is great normally…but this summer has been ridiculously cold (I know you’ve been loving it Mavis!). Most days barely get into the low 70’s and still getting into mid-low 50’s at night. Only a couple of days have reached into the 80’s at all. Sad thing is, September is generally when is starts cooling off so we have basically no “real” summer to look forward to this year. I am SO BUMMED. This is what people complain about when they complain about Seattle weather. I dread seeing what kind of wet never-ending winter we’ll have this year.
On the reclaimed food side…..
This week I got:
~8# of sweet potatoes (YES!)
10 small leeks (tossed cuz they were too small to sell?)
1 avocado
1lb strawberries
4 roma tomatoes
6 ears corn
Happy to have a quieter week because I did some canning and cooking and sitting in the park in the SUNshine!
