When I picked up my 4 free boxes of “chicken scraps” from Mr. Produce Guy this week I was pretty hopeful. As I quickly placed the boxes in the back of the car, I was thinking, cool we’d have grapes and cantaloupe for lunches, and plenty of lettuce for soft tacos this week. Sweet!
Then I went home and sorted the loot.
Whoop. T. Do. This was all I was able to reclaim. The grapes were soft, the rinds on the melon looked iffy, and I was only able to salvage 1 head of lettuce from the entire box. Oh well, beggars can’t be choosers right? Ha! I can’t hit the jackpot every week now can I?
Peace Out Girl Scouts, have a great day. Now go forth and save something from the trash!

Have you thought about investing in a steam juicer, to process some of the nearly dead fruits? I just got one and it’s awesome. It removes lots of juice from all kinds of things painlessly, no dripping jelly bags no seiving. I see pints of yummy grape juice in that box!

I would have taken the grapes off the stems and froze them…my kids love them that way for a snack. I’ve had cantelope that the outside rind doesn’t look great, but the inside is perfect…I just cut off the rind and chop the cantelope up for smoothies – yum!

We have found that the best tasting cantaloupes come from funky looking rinds

It was a total sad week here in reclaimed food. One half of a carrot. Seriously. My one produce guy was out of town and the other place had nothing but trimmings, weird.
Course, I DID pick up my 40# box of Zaycon chicken breasts. Now trying to figure out where on earth to put in all in my overpacked freezer — I think I may have to barter/sell a 8lb bag of it!

Well I mustered up the courage to ask this week and was told no. “Company policy”
But I asked! Next time I’ll try a smaller market. So your take was still much better than mine!

I have asked both our local stores one gives to the small zoo? and the other said they cant take the chance that someone will get sick, the girl said she has asked the store owner and that is his claim, I even told her about the act from Bill Clinton about not having any one sue them. Ugh well I tried, maybe another day.

They shut me down Mavis. Walked in this morning and got told that Security was shutting me down. *sigh* I just smiled and said thanks for everything and walked out.

The grocer I go to gives the pulled but usable fruits and vegetables to the Salvation Army food site, along with the pulled baked goods. The trimmings buckets get picked up by a stable in the area.
