After mapping out my tentative garden plans for 2012 I decided it was time to move the chicken coop. By moving the coop I reclaimed not only my raspberry patch but a nice 6’x8′ piece of heavily fertilized property.
I don’t think I have ever tried to grow a giant pumpkin, but this year, size matters and I’ve decided to go for it. I’m hoping the chicken fertilizer will help. I live in the Pacific Northwest and traditionally it does not get super hot around here so I’m going to need all the help I can get. I can’t think of a better place to grow a giant pumpkin than the site of Ye’ Old Coop.
Here is what I hope to accomplish {garden wise} this week:
#1 Order the remaining seeds I think I’ll need.
#2 Revamp the raspberry patch. Tie all the canes up into 7 pretty little rows.
#3 Clean up and stake the future giant pumpkin site.
#4 Clean up the side of the house and pea gravel walkway.
I have a question for YOU.
Have you ever tried to grow a giant pumpkin? Were you successful? How much did it weigh? Do you have any tricks/tips you’d like to share?

I love garden layouts and graph paper. I have many myself…it’s a bit of a hobby, really. I also love your new header.
I have not grown a giant pumpkin. But I have grown two accidental pumpkins…volunteers, if you will. It grew right next to our front porch…up ONTO the front porch…it was crazy. And we got two perfect pumpkins to carve in time for Halloween that year.

We have grown a very large pumpkin and I vowed to never do it again. But it all depends on your goal for the pumpkin. Is it to enter in the fair? Do you wish to eat said pumpkin? Because we found out the the really large pumpkins are NOT good for eating… but the pig enjoyed it immensely and we in turn enjoyed eating the pig. The pie pumpkins which are small are the best way for eating. Ask “Jane” or “JJ” as I think they would both be qualified to answer the pumpkin questions.
Good luck!!

I think I just want to go for size not taste. I suppose the chickens can have at it when I’m done with it. 🙂
