Yesterday it was raining pretty much all day, and so by mid afternoon, I was looking to something other than rug hooking or writing to work on. Also, I had been itching to get something on the wall in the family room. So, I decided to make a pussy willow wreath with the stems I had collected a few days earlier.
I didn’t have a wreath form, and had no interest in driving {who knows how long} to the craft store to get one. But, as luck would have it, I found an old Christmas wreath behind the barn. Taking the dead pine branches off was easy, and, it yielded just the right amount of grey wire to re-use for my new pussy willow wreath.
If you’ve never made a wreath using branches from your backyard before, it’s crazy easy and here are the pictures to prove it. The whole project, took about 20 minutes. And hey, the entire project was free. What’s not to love? π
East Step By Step Directions for Making a Pussy Willow Wreath
- Gather fresh pussy willow branches.
- Use pruning shears to cut the stems into 7-11 inch lengths.
- Separate pussy willow stems into bundles. {I used 12 bundles for my 14″ wreath form}
- Place the pussy willow bundle along a section of the wreath form and secure the bundle to the wreath frame with floral or any other fine gauge wire.
- Take the next bundle and secure it just below the first pussy willow bundle securing the bundle so it is hiding the wires of the first bundle.
- Repeat the process until the entire wreath form is covered and you are happy with the way your pussy willow wreath looks.
- If needed, fill in wreath with extra pussy willow stems for a fuller look.
When you are finished, twist a 4 inch loop of wire and attach it to the back of the frame for hanging.
Plain and simple. It’s the best way to decorate.

I remember pussywillows growing up on the east coast. Love them. Silly question, will you need to replace the branches as it dries out or does it stay βas isβ?
I love the weath and thank you for sharing instructions.

Looks great , my mom was an interior decorator and loved pussy willows , we always had them as well as bulrushes, she would spray with clear lacquer or hair spray and they would last for years and stay cleaner that way .
New digs look fabulous.

Very pretty. Pussy willows are very easy to root if you want more. Stick them in water, wait for roots, plant. How’s the tick battle coming along?
