As we were driving home yesterday, The Girl Who Thinks She’s a Bird noticed a few blackberries near our house. So as soon as we pulled into the driveway, we ran into the house, grabbed several containers, and wondered aloud how many we would fill.
As we walked down the road we were pleasantly surprised at how many berries there were to pick. Usually we aren’t foraging for berries until around the end of August. But we had such a wet spring this year that I think it kind of bumped up the harvest a little.
As far as berry picking goes, some years are better than others. I can remember a few summers ago we were able to collect and freeze over 25 pounds of blackberries. We had so many berries left over by the following summer, we only went out picking 1 time.
It took us about 30 minutes to pick just over 4 quarts of blackberries.
Now comes the tough decision. What should I make first?
Ahhh summer, I love you.

We have a bunch of wild blackberries growing behind our house that I never have picked. The odd part is I love blackberries. One of the reasons is I am not sure how they will taste. Maybe I’ll have to try them this year and pick them.
Where do you usually forage for blackberries?
Mavis says
Seriously? Pick them! LOL… Give them a try. 🙂

Mavis, is your high-maintenance suburbia at the edge of a wilderness? That’s a nice wood fence along the blackberries, so I was wondering if it was actually in someone’s yard? Do you have to ask permission?
Mavis says
Our prime picking area is in our high-maintenance suburbia {at the edge of a wilderness} park, so it’s common property. 🙂 Luckily the only people who pick there are the Hillbillys {not often} and Girly Girl {just once a year to make a pie} so we typically have it all to ourselves.

Hubby has picked blackberries the last 2 weekends. I’ve made 30 jars of jam (both 8 and 16 oz) and 2 blackberry crisp’s. I still have enought to fill my freezer! I think we are the only ones who pick in our area and the bushes are abbondant. we will probably go out next weekend too!

30 jars of blackberry jam? Holy canolies! I love making blackberry pies all winter long. It’s my favorite dessert to make. Keep up the good work!

My parents live on a two acre lot and there are blackberries at the back of the property. Every couple days my dad will go out early in the morning and pick a crate of berries and then he has my mom deliver them to me when she comes in to town for the day. Free berries, picked and delivered to my front door – can’t beat that! I really appreciate it and have made a couple cobblers, eat them fresh and freeze tons of them to last us through the winter!

Hand delivered berries? Can’t beat that. Your Dad is awesome.
