Yesterday I stopped by King Arthur Flour’s Vermont campus in Norwich, Vermont to pick up some specialty flours for a few bread recipes I want to try out. The goal is to hone in on my bread baking skills before winter sets in so I can get a routine down before the weather turns bad, and I’ll be inside working on my “secret holiday” project 24/7.
If you’ve never been to King Arthur Flour’s Vermont campus in Norwich, Vermont it’s quite a treat. The bakery/cafe is enormous, and a hot spot for locals and bakers alike. The layout and the design of the building is pretty awesome too.
The menu at the cafe is a pretty good size, and serves up a nice assorted fair of soups and sandwiches, salads and of course pastries.
This time around, I ordered the roast turkey, tart apple and smoked gouda sandwich for lunch, and it was delicious. Once I get a good sandwich bread recipe down, I think I’ll be making this sandwich VERY often for lunch.
I also ordered a deep-dark chocolate brownie and a blueberry scone for the next day. Note to self: Look up the brownie recipe and make a double batch and send one batch to Monkey Boy.
Not only is the gift shop filled with specialty flours and baking mixes, but there are a ton of baking supplies, books and as well. And if you need help, there is plenty of staff on hand to help you find the items on your list. {I needed help!} 😉
It was a good trip. I filled my belly and my cart and went home happy. What more could a girl ask for? If you do find yourself planning a trip to the store though, be sure and check the King Arthur Flour events page before you leave because several times a month, they offer discounts on their products. I made sure to go on a day when they were offering 20%. Plus, I hear that if you are shopping at the store on Mother’s day, they are handing out a few box of their chocolate cupcake mix at the registers.
Keep calm and eat one,
~Mavis

I’ve ordered from King Arthur before and love it! I live too far to go to Vermont. Texas is a long way, away. Loved the photos though.

I’ve been trying a lot of King Arthur recipes lately, and they’ve been consistently good! I like their sandwich bread recipe, too: https://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/classic-sandwich-bread-recipe Maybe that’s what you’re looking for? 🙂

I live in the Berkshires in Massachuetts. I visited King Arthur’s a few years ago and look forward to returning for a baking class some time. Great place!

Question for you- I love to bake and would gladly send my son and daughter who live across the US ( like Monkey boy) some homemade goodies. Have you found an inexpensive way to do it? I’ve pretty much just stopped sending them gifts and send checks for birthdays/holidays now boohoo. Also, how will you package the brownies?
Mavis Butterfield says
I just stuff a small or medium flat rate box with treats in a zip baggie and some padding and call it good. 🙂
Nan says
OK thanks- expensive but a homemade treat and would get there pretty fast.
Kirsten says
You were able to save the scone and brownie till the next day! Ha! They would have been my snack on the drive home !
Angela D. says
Ha! Same!!!!

How I love their store! It is a great place to go on a cold winter’s day. Their website is wonderful and their help line is very convient for any issues that arise.
Teri says
Can’t stand the suspense of waiting to find out what your secret holiday project is!!
Are you finding it nicer to drive there than in the seattle area?
Mavis Butterfield says
The drive is a HUGE difference. 🙂

Slightly off subject, I live near Norwich, Norfolk England! I assume that’s where the name came from, Our city was second to London and has the most beautiful cathedral which is over 900 years old. A couple of interesting facts about the U.K. sister are:-
1) The name Norwich first appears on a coin minted in the early 10th Century. 2) Norwich has the largest walled centre and longest run of medieval defences in England. 3) Sixteen Revelations Of Divine Love by Dame Julian of Norwich, written about 1393, is thought to have been the first book in English written by a woman.
So there you go.
On the subject of flour I buy seeded Wholemeal flour which I mix 50:50 with a good white bread flour. It makes a really beautiful loaf. I am a tad lazy though these days as I use a bread-maker.

Wow! The history is amazing! Sometimes the internet can be a hateful, awful place. But it is times like this that I really love. Even though you live so far away and are able to communicate with someone here is just amazing and wonderful. Thanks for sharing!

I recently discovered that the King Arthur bread lab is up in our neck of the woods. I have been very anxious to take a class.

About the time I think I have figured out what state you live in, a new post throws a wrench into that thinking process!

I often feel guilty as I’ve wanted more and more to stay home. I retired after a long career in the medical field (my HH is still working)….I putter, do some things in our small yard, enjoy cookery, love my dog, read a lot, knit, but increasingly don’t want to be busy. Question for you: did you used to like being out and about during the child raising years or was all that action always against your natural nature. I did buy a hooking kit to give it a try. My hoop should be arriving soon. You mentioned that you taught yourself. Trial and error or videos? Hope Youtube will be my friend. Thanks for your great blog

I love KAF. Call me crazy, but they have the prettiest bathrooms! Gorgeous stonework. So happy to see you loving New England, Mavis!

For some reason I see a weaving loom in your future…a guess but you would certainly be good at it!
King Arthur is on my bucket list. I use only their flour and buy tons when it is on sale. I keep it in the freezer.
KA has a campus in WA too…but I prefer visiting VT.
Lucky you to be living your dream-keep it up and keep sharing it with us.

I see rug braiding in her future. We had an heirloom braided wool rug when I was growing up (passed down from great-grandparents) — it was gigantic and looked perfect with my parents’ antique Windsor chairs, etc. Sadly, it never made it onto the moving van heading out West.

Hmmm…that’s almost a three hour drive from my home in the Boston suburbs. Very tempting though – I do love their catalogs!

King Arthur bread flour makes the best pizza dough – – – follow your favorite recipe, but use King Arthur flour.
Mel says
Agreed! I thought it was just me.
Melanie says
I never thought about it before but I did use KA flour for pizza dough. Could not figure out why it turned out so much better than before. Now I know!
Torry says
Did you notice cookie cutters? (Asks the cookie cutter collector with [cough, cough] several thousand [cough, cough] cookie cutters.)
KAF should pay you for the advertising! (Even if only in product!)

That’s them!!! Thanks SandyF.

I look forward to the sandwich bread trials. I make all our bread, and I have a few decent whole grain sandwich breads but none I’d call perfect. There are only two of us, so my ideal bread needs to remain soft at least a few days and freeze well. I know whole grain bread doesn’t last as long as white, but so many of them become overly dense and dry within 24 hours.

I recently acquired the KAF sourdough starter. I love making a sponge Saturday night with buttermilk and the starter, leaving it out overnight, and having sourdough pancakes Sunday morning.
Mavis Butterfield says
I wrote it on my list as I was shopping but forgot to ask for it at the register!!! I’ll have to grab it next time. I’m glad you like it.
Connie K. says
Love that there’s one in Washington too! I’ll have to check it out sometime soon.

Another place you might enjoy going to is Fry’s Measure Mill in Wilton, N. H. It has colonial wooden items made at the water wheel powered mill, plus shaker items. They have a web site.
Glad you got the bug hat. Those tiny beasts can eat you alive.

You went right by my house. I live right down the road from King Arthur! Didja wave going by???
Just wondering if they had (and you saw) the bargain baskets toward the back of the store? I get all kinds of good stuff there – especially after the holidays, like $7.99 mixes for $2.99. Woo hoo! Sometimes I go just to check out the bargain baskets and save them up for pot lucks and other baking necessities.
Hint: If you like their scone mixes, Market Basket has them for significantly less than they do right at KA.
Don’t forget to wave next time you drive by!! Rap on the door, we can do coffee!

This weekend I found a new looking King Arthur Flour tea loaf pan at a church rummage sale. Our bag cost $5.00 and I had the loaf pan, four dinner plates and a pile of books all in the one bag. I just checked the KAF website and the tea loaf pan is worth $14.95. Now I need to figure out the first recipe to try in it. If I hadn’t read your post about going to KAF I probably wouldn’t have picked it up.
