I feel like I’ve been a total slacker in the gardening department lately. Seriously. But those days are behind me now because yesterday the HH picked up a truckload of potting soil for me {here’s how to make your own potting soil} and for the first time in about a month, I took some serious time off from all the craziness that’s been going on {traveling, moving, the remodel} and went outside and played in the dirt.
It was pretty RAD. I got half of the lower hedge area weeded, {noticed I said weeded and not pruned?, yeah, that’s coming} and shoveled some serious dirt too. It felt great!
All the pots I brought with me from the old place are now full and ready to be planted {I’m not sure with what yet though} and things are finally started to look up in the gardening department around here.
I also had to came to a decision as to where/what I was going to do with the stock tanks I was previously using in my old greenhouse. I new I wanted to keep them, but I just wasn’t sure where to put them because honestly, they can be kind of an eye sore if you don’t have a fenced yard. Which we don’t have at this point.
My neighbor lady across the street actually has one in the front of her house {and it looks great} but it’s pretty hidden and she has plants cascading over the side so it looks pretty spiffy. My stock tanks on the other hand are pretty bare, and stick out like a sore thumb when placed alongside my house. Can you spot Lucy the trouble puggle in the picture? {Hint she’s up high}.
Ultimately I decided to just use one stock tank for now. I plan on using it to plant some winter veggies until I can get the backyard garden dug up and ready for action. I was also thinking about painting the stock tank to match the house as well.
What do you think?
One isn’t too much of an eyesore, is it?

Painting would be fast and effective. Thanks for the photos and hug Lucy for me!

Lucy in the window! Woof!

I love the metal of them and don’t think they are eyesores at all. So, nope, I wouldn’t paint them just keep using them. Looks like a gardener lives there!

I don’t think they’re an eyesore at all, you should be fine. I like them. If they bother you though paint ’em and feel better. Will you be pre-treating or sealing the paint at all to guard against scratches? IT seems to me that the paint might scratch off the metal easily.

At first I thought don’t paint, just remove the sticker and slap some wheels on the bottom of them. A quick peruse through pinterest showed some beauties painted in black or white (used as indoor bathtubs.) You are hip Mavis, make a feature of them.

That’s an awesome idea, Suzanne! At first I thought, naw, leave them as they are, but then, loved your idea, esp. about slapping wheels on them. Mavis IS indeed hip!! She’ll be trend setting in her new neighborhood! 🙂

Why not paint the stock tanks bright colors and turn ’em into yard art?
jd says
Most definitely paint and something to coordinate with what you have going on with house paint and trim. It will be fine.

I’m not quite sure why you think it’s an eyesore! It looks great, I would love to have one!

Did you leave your greenhouse behind?
Diane says
I saw somebody who glued those woven beach mats which I think are bamboo on the exterior of her stock tank.
Wish I had thought to take a picture. I don’t know if I would have thought of that. They seemed to last a long time, so she may have treated them as well. Unfortunately she has moved and I can’t ask her.
. I don’t mind the looks of the stock tank. Just thought I’d mention this as I thought it a nifty idea.
Tamara says
Leave them plain; but if you must paint, paint them black. Black is a neutral that blends in allowing flowers and foliage to pop!
Erica says
Great idea! I like the metal. Do you drill some holes in the bottom for drainage?
Meredith says
I was wondering about your greenhouse! May I please ask the reason you decided not to keep it? I am about to put mine up lol.
Thank you Mavis! I so appreciate you sharing your views! 😀
Carol says
Meredith, Mavis had posted she left her greenhouse because it would have left a huge, ugly spot if they pulled it out. I’m pretty sure she is planning on getting another one! Good luck with yours……hopefully you will send her some photos to post.

I love the idea of using stock tanks! I want to use some next year. We live in California in the High desert, and our soil SUCKS!!! I think they have a rustic attractiveness to them and they look cool. 🙂
