The Girl Who Things She’s a Bird has turned into sort of a vitamin water freak lately. She’s whipped up so many different concoctions, I can’t even keep track. Apparently, vitamin water is all the rage right now. And, you know me, I’m cutting edge {ha!}, so I figured, I better get on board and ride the vitamin water train. Who knows, maybe this is the key to drinking more water?
I know you can buy vitamin water at the store, but they don’t look nearly as sophisticated as The Girl’s versions, and I am sure if you got right down to it, they probably aren’t nearly as healthy.
Basically, all you need is:
- A Picther or Mason Jar
- Water {filtered, Evian, or my personal favorite: tap}
- Fruit
- Ice
- A wooden spoon
This stuff is basically like lemon water on crack. It turns it up a notch. Get together some fruit {no bananas} and slice ‘em up. Think berries, pineapple, watermelon, citrus anything. You can add herbs, which is supposed to be a flavor sensation {I’m thinking mint would be awesome}.
Place the fruit/herbs in the bottom of the pitcher/jar, and using a wooden spoon, mash up the fruit. No need to abuse the fruit, just mash it enough to get the flavors out. Then, top the fruit mixture with ice, and finish with water. Now pop that thing in the fridge and let all of the flavors marinate.
How easy is that? Plus, everytime you pour yourself a glass, it feels like you are at an upscale spa—well, it does if you close your eyes tight enough to push the pile of laundry in the corner that needs folding out of your mind. {Side note: if you don’t like the bits of fruit in your glass, you can always pour the mixture over a strainer into your glass, leaving just the flavored water. I kind of like the fruit bits, though.}

We have been doing something similar since our last trip to Norway, where it is very common to find a pitcher of water with wedges of lime or citrus, herbs, and other fruit in the bottom, especially at buffets. So easy and very tasty 🙂

If you don’t mind buying a “unitasker” applicance, you could spring for an infuser pitcher. I’m not a tea drinker but some of them do iced tea in addition to fruit infused water. My favorite is cucumber water. I went to a turkish restaurant in Chicago several years ago and they served it. Amazing! It’s so awesome on hot days.

I am sure it is delicious, and good for her, but “vitamin” water does have added vitamins and electrolytes. My daughter needs to drink water with electrolytes when the weather is hot because of medication she takes. Vitamin water brand, or Smart water, or Gator Aid all work.
What you have there is “flavored water.”
I love water flavored with berries myself!

I’ve been doing this with frozen fruit….specifically pineapple. The frozen chunks flavor the water and double as ice cubes. I’ll have to try it with strawberries as well. In the morning I usually try to drink a mason jar of water and it is so nice to have a little flavor in it. The rest of the day plain water is fine but a little flavor in the morning is my favorite. Go to the grocery store and in the frozen food section there is an area where they sell the concentrated juices.. Select Parcha (Passion Fruit) or Guanabana (Soursop) or any of the other ones for your vitamin water drinks.. This reminds me of when I was a kid and mom would purchase the frozen lemonade concentrates which cost 12 containers for a buck and then make the juice with additional water because she would also add other things like mint or mango or orange slices all of which came from our backyard.

I love making these for my girls. They taste soooo good and are good for you!! The fresh fruits added to the water offer many vitamins and minerals and most even have a little potassium and a lot less sugar than the bottled “Vitamin Water.”

I’ve been doing the fruit vitamin water for about a year now. Another way to drink more water is to keep some next to you. It it’s there, you’ll drink it more. I also like to put a couple of teaspoons of apple cider vinegar, and a couple of Tablespoons of honey in a jar of water with ice. It’s good for your digestion. I may be weird, but I like the taste.
