You’ve just got to love mothers. Especially ones from the South who can sympathize with getting eaten alive by bugs. After reading about my battles trying to clear the heavily wooded back area of the garden, Mama Hillbilly {Mrs. HB’s mom} decided she needed to make us a set of hats. And boy did she ever do a marvelous job!!!
I know what you are thinking… Mavis, where can I get an amazing hat like this? Well, I guess you could order one off of amazon or something, but these mosquito net hats are SO EASY TO MAKE, I think you should just put on your pair of crafty pants and make one yourself.
All you need is a hat and 2 yards of Mosquito Netting {make sure it’s 72″ wide}. Place your hat underneath the center of the 72″ x 72″ piece of netting, cut a hole a little larger than the size of the center of the hat, and carefully roll back the netting so it’s 2 or three layers thick.
Pin the netting into place. Using the zigzag stitch on your sewing machine, sew the netting in place around the inside brim of the hat.
Here’s a close up picture of the stitching on the outside of the hat.
Darrrrrling. Mosquito hats all all the rage this year. Just you wait and see, everyone will be wearing them from the back country lanes to the cat walk.
Thanks Mama HB. You are AWESOME!

I made Susan’s Lilac Jelly yesterday and it was great fun! The flavor is delightful and I definitely will make it again. Two things I’d do differently: My Lilac’s are just blooming so I’d wait a few days for a more mature full bloom. I think it would be easier to get the flowers off the stem and might even add a bit more flavor. I’d also go ahead and buy purple food coloring instead of making it by mixing blue and red. The color mixing was tricky and I would hate to risk ruining the infused liquid by turning it black. I’ll be looking forward to a Lavender Jelly recipe next.
Oh, and those Chocolate Brownie Cookies….to die for!!

So adorable! I love that Mrs. HB and family still are involved with your life and your blog. As a New Englander I am loving the local bent to some of your posts…now if HH wants to truly become a New Englander he may want to sample whole belly fried clams! He may never go back to the strips!!

Love the hat! I am mosquito magnet. Did you know that mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors, especially in the afternoon when they are the most active?
