I snapped a few pictures of our backyard garden this morning and was really surprised at how well everything is growing lately. I haven’t been able to play in the garden much this past week so it’s kind of reassuring to know all the fruits and vegetables are thriving. 🙂Â
The peas, broccoli and radishes in this bed are getting so big! The peas have not started to cling to the wire cages yet but I’m sure they’ll start soon.Â
In years past we’ve tried potato towers but this year because we’ve got so much going on I decided to just plant a few potatoes in a raised garden bed. Once the potato plants get a little bigger I will cover the leaves with more soil.
We have a great view of the greenhouse from our family room window and I love when the sun is shining on it. The herbs alongside the greenhouse are growing like mad and almost all of the lettuce we overwintered has been harvested. Next on this list, tomatoes!Â
Check out the cabbage plants. I’d say they’re doing really well, wouldn’t you?
And last but not least, the raspberry jungle. We have 7 rows of Cascadia raspberries growing, and by the looks of it, we’re going to have a bumper crop this year.
How is YOUR garden doing these days?
What are you looking forward to planting next? Me? More basil and tomatoes.
Keep calm and garden on,
~ Mavis

Since you are getting ready to plant your tomatoes (and have chickens and plenty of chicken manure) I thought I would share my favorite tomato fertilizer mix.
4 quarts aged chicken manure
1 cup finely ground egg Shells (I use an old coffee grinder)
1/2 cup dog hair (saved from brushing Lucy)
1/2 cup used coffee grounds
1/2 cup hardwood ashes
Thoroughly mix all ingredients together. Place 1 cup into each hole before putting in your tomatoes. When your plants begin to set fruit, side dress with another 1/2 cup. Makes enough for a dozen plants. I guarantee you will get the sweetest most flavorful tomatoes ever with this mix.

Mavis–I am always AMAZED by your carrots! They always come up and get so big! What, oh what, is your secret?!? I just planted my second packet of carrot seeds last night (I planted this season’s first carrot seed packet last weekend), but given how dismal our carrot crops have been the past 2 years, I’m not very hopeful. Mine never come up, or, if they do, only a very, very small number of seedlings emerge. I’m just always in awe of yours! Please, do tell!

Mavis,
I have a question about the upright pallet frame KK made for her pumpkins and mellons. Won’t the weight of the fruit break the stems if they are hanging down too far? I have one of those “topsey turvery” planters my neightbor gave me last year and all the tomato plants stems broke once the fruit started getting big. I ended up trying to save them by tying pantihose around them and stringing thru the top of the hanger. Was a big pain and I lost a lot of fruit. The pallet looks very fun but I want to make sure my stuff will ripen up.
