The weather has been pretty wonky here all week. One minute it’s raining and the wind is blowing like crazy, and the next it’s sunny and cheerful. Luckily I can sneak outside and work on my garden clean up projects in small bursts throughout the day.
The section just outside the dining room is officially cleared off. The tomatoes I was growing in containers have placed onto the compost heap, Lemon the Lemon tree has been moved to the front porch and the empty pots have been moved to the garage.
It’s slim pickings when it comes to tomatoes lately. I’ve pulled all but 6 remaining tomatoes plants I have in the galvanized stock tanks alongside the house. And I’m going to keep them there until the temps hover around the low 40’s.
Buttercup squash make the best pies!
And so it begins…
Can you name that shroom? It sure it pretty.
The HH installed 2 totally unapproved cedar posts yesterday for my new raspberry trellis. 😉 Luckily they are below the fence line so the snoopervisors shouldn’t notice. Unless they are reading the blog. Bahahhaa! Really, like I care. And in case you are wondering what I’ll be wearing for Halloween this year… I’ll be wearing this.
Lucy’s favorite pastime. Digging.
Green beans in the middle of October? No freakin’ way!
Our winter broccoli is in! I am actually pretty late {like 6 weeks late} planting it so I’m not sure if we’ll end up with any. But you know what? Life is short. Go for it I say.
And check out those beets!!! This was my first time growing cylindrical beets. And it will be my last. I think I’ll stick to my Detroit Dark Reds. Maybe I’m weird, but I think beets should be round. Although I do think the cylindrical beets are easier to peel.
What’s happening in YOUR garden?
Do you still have tomato plants lingering?

This year’s garden is being sponsored by the awesome folks at Botanical Interests Seed Company. You can check out their website HERE, order their new 2015 Garden Seed Catalog, or see the seeds I’ll be growing in my garden this year HERE.

Please get rid of the mushroom! I would hate to see Lucy the Puggle Princess dig/eat them.
Crystal says
I think that the mushroom is a rather soggy and rotten chanterelle, but from a picture it is really hard to positively identify mushrooms.

I have one lush green paste tomato plant still going, and one plant that is on its last legs that I am hoping to keep going long enough to ripen up the last of the beefsteaks. The lemon, pear, Sungold and Sweet 100 I pulled today. Several cups of the cherry tomatoes were wasted. My daughter was supposed to take them home while we were in France for three weeks, but she forgot. The weeds went crazy while I was gone, so I am grateful for this week of mostly dry days to catch up with that.

Aw, I was hoping to see a giant pink flamingo costume when I clicked that link!
Mavis says
Ha. That would be awesome!

I pulled out all my tomato plants but I still have about 10 lbs of green romas steadily turning red on my back sideboard. I left a couple of more tender plants in a makeshift greenhouse I made with long sticks and heavy clear painters tarp and duct tape. It survived the windstorm, so I have hope it’ll make it through the winter. We’ll see!

I live in the southeast corner of Washington, so our weather is great. I am still growing beans too and my tomatoes are at their best right now. I have covered them up with a sheet hoping to give them some protection in case of any frost.

I am in SW WA and each and every one of my 17 tomato plants I put in this year are still rocking, I picked a bucket load yesterday and don’t forsee it ending for another two weeks with the way the temps are swinging back up for a while.
Other odd things still going strong mid October: Summer squash (the same plants I had rocking in June- so weird), green beans and cucumbers. So many cucumbers. This fall has been so weird- just last night we at a full salad from the garden and had bowls of fresh strawberries for dessert. As long as we get enough precipitation this year I won’t complain about the extra long growing season!
Mavis says
This growing season is so crazy this year. So fun you are still getting such a huge harvest!

I’ve grown Cylindra beets for years. They don’t need to be diced for pickling, and the small round slices serve up so nicely — pretty on the plate!
Mavis says
Pretty on the plate is a huge part of why I prepare certain foods.

I also grew cylindrical beets this year, but I won’t grow this variety next year. I also have green pole beans still growing! Isn’t it awesome we still have green beans and it’s mid October? I’ve been making dilly beans out of them!
