Garden box #1.
The weather here in Western Washington has been crazy good this year and as a result the vegetable garden is really taking off. In this bed we have cucumbers, radish, zucchini, tomatoes, lettuce, 2 rows of beets and 3 rows carrots.
The radishes will be ready to pick next week. Once we harvest those a row of beet seeds will get planted in their place.
Garden Bed #2
Patty pan squash, lettuce, cauliflower, tomatoes, carrots, turnips and parsnips. Weeeee!
The romaine lettuce is going bonkers. I guess a Caesar salad is on the menu for today for Father’s Day.
Last week I transplanted the 15 raspberry canes that I planted earlier this spring in a long row near the fence. Later this fall I plan on moving our blueberry bushes and strawberry plants to this area to create a berry patch.
Lemon, our Meyer lemon tree has a lot of baby lemons right now. It will be interesting to see how many we end up with.
In another 2 weeks I don’t think I’ll be able to see out the kitchen window! The tomato plants have gone bonkers.
We are just now starting to get a few strawberries. There won’t be much to harvest this year {I don’t think so anyway} but I’m hoping we will get a bunch of runners this fall and so that next summer we will have a full strawberry patch.
And last but not least… Rainbow Swiss chard.
How is YOUR garden doing? What are you harvesting?

Your garden looks beautiful!

What, how much and how often do you feed your Myers Lemon? I have a Myers Lime in a container that blooms like crazy but it drops all but one or two baby limes.
Vicki says
I am curious if you use a fertilizer on your tomatoes…actually, your garden in general. I know it hasn’t been planted too long, but it looks so beautiful and healthy. Once again, I am sharing my garden with the chipmunks…the little darlings are biting off the blooms on my zucchini and my yellow crook neck squash, which just seems to stunt their growth. A few, actually most of them look like they haven’t been planted but a couple of weeks, when they were planted in April. They are also pulling up onions and just leaving them there, no bites out of them, just pulling them up. Thank goodness they don’t seem to like tomatoes! Even though I use composted cow manure, it seems nothing is getting enough nutrients, It’s a pitiful looking mess. Any ideas?

Hi Vicki, are you local? I use Tagro in my garden. It’s treated biosoil waste from the city of Tacoma. And it rocks!
Vicki says
Unfortunately for my garden, I am not local…I live in the sunny South in Alabama. I wonder if they ship Tagro or if they have something similar here. Thanks for the info!

I’m in the hot and humid south (Georgia) also and I’ve found the best amendment to my raised garden beds is mushroom compost. I add a couple of bags to each bed before my spring and fall plantings.

I was watering my garden this morning and pulled a golden beet out of the ground (before watering) wiped it off on the grass and ate it right there. Ahhh, I love summer!!!!

My lime is loaded but the lemon isn’t blooming yet 🙁 I brought the lemon into the house and it bloomed all winter I left the lime on the enclosed front porch. Did I mess up its blooming cycle? I also was given a bunch of shriveled potato starts from the feed store and planted them and they’re starting to emerge. Does anyone think its worth the time to water them?

I was just wondering… are you worried about planting the raspberries so close to the fence? They will spread underneath it… well, could send a lot of shoots out that way. I was just worried about your very prohibitive HOA… I think everything looks so beautiful though! I guess if the neighbor behind doesn’t complain, you are helping them out! 🙂
Mavis Butterfield says
No I am not worried. It’s hard to tell from the photo but there is plenty of room and I tend to stay on top of things so I am not worried about them getting out of control. This fall I plant to add a trellis to the area.
Julie says
I lettuce one of those use it or lose it items? What do you do with all of the extra lettuce?
Mavis Butterfield says
I’m a little OCD and like to grow a complete row of it and usually we end up with extras. I give the extra lettuce to my neighbors usually.

Your garden looks amazing!
Question: What are some tips or tricks that you have for protecting your garden during extreme heat spells? Spokane WA is supposed to hit the triple digits this weekend and I am a little worried about the last of my spring vegetables? I have hoop houses over my raised beds and will be covering them with burlap shade cloth before the heat strikes, any other tips would be greatly appreciated!
Mavis Butterfield says
Hi JJ. I will address this in this weeks Mavis Mail post on Friday. It is a great question!!

Mavis what do you use for pest control? Here in Florida every time I plant anything it gets covered in spider mites, aphids and white fly =\
