A view from the top of the hill.
The container gardens on the back patio are still lush and hanging in there. The hedges have been trimmed and we are still picking beans from the teepees every few days.
With all the great weather we’ve had this summer it will be interesting to see how long our tomatoes last. Usually by this time of year the tomato plants have all died back and everything is dead. But not this year. At this rate we might still be picking fresh tomatoes in October. I guess only time will tell.
The lettuce we have growing in the mini vertical garden is doing great.
The cherry tomatoes are growing like gangbusters!
Round 3 of the beans should be ready to harvest in another 2 weeks or so.
Last week I planted one of the garden boxes with Brussels sprouts, carrots, beets and turnips. This is my first year starting Brussels sprouts in the fall so I am a little unsure of they will do.
Once the weather cools down a little bit more and the leaves from the root crops I planted emerge I’ll cover the garden box with leaf much to help protect the tender seedlings on chilly nights. I LOVE growing root crops in the winter.
This summer I planted thyme and lavender along the fence line. Next spring I’ll plant a third pear espalier tree where the middle flamingos are.
And last but not least, the wisteria I planted in May is taking it’s own sweet time climbing up the trellis. You probably can’t see it in the photo but I have twine wrapped around the base of the wisteria and it runs up to the top of the trellis. We have planted wisteria at our last few houses and it seems like the first year it hardly grows at all. But once it gets going… watch out because it really takes off and needs to be pruned twice a year.
Well that’s what is happening in our garden… how are things coming along in yours?

Your backyard garden is beautiful! What the heck is wrong with your hoa?

That is the question of the year?!!

Where did you get the mini vertical garden?
And your garden looks amazing. If I was Lucy I’d be out there all the time too!
Lace Faerie says
Yes, please tell! Did I miss that info before? I’d love to have outside my kitchen door!

Planted my fall broccoli sets on Friday – hoping for a Thanksgiving harvest. Rice has been harvested and have cleared out most of the raised beds. Have a bin of horse manure that I mucked out of a friends stall that’s been composting all summer, gonna top dress the beds with that for spring planting.
Only other thing going on is that I’m looking to bring down 3 more trees soon. 2 hackberry trees that attract insects and black mold that are now attacking my citrus trees and a small oak that is growing next to one of the hackberries. Not sure what to put their place. Thinking about an Autumn Glory Maple or maybe a Pecan tree.
Got any suggestions? I’ve got pear, peach, apple and plum trees espaliered (the cherries didn’t make it so well 🙁 ), so don’t need any of them. I was thinking the pecan would be something useful, but don’t know how many years til it fruits. Any other fruit or nut trees that might go well in a GA yard? 🙂

Your home and garden are so lush and beautiful. Are you liking it better now that the fence is up, your garden is growing and the HOA is off your case?
Mavis says
So. Much. Better. It was rough there for a bit! Oh and thanks for the compliment!

I’d like to know where you got the mini vertical garden too. It looks like it would be great for planting herbs.

The peeps at minigardening.com sent it to me.

Pretty jealous. First hard fall frost here in the mountains of Arizona, everything is dead 🙁 Our growing season is less than 100 days! Time for the hoops to go back up, but our days get to 80 degrees so it’s so hard not to fry the plants!! Love your arbor over your gate, did you do it or the fence company?
