Backyard Garden Plot Pictures – Week 31 of 52
Check out the pumpkin vines coming out of the oak barrel alongside the potting bench. How cool is that? I’m going to have to train the vines to grow straight pretty soon because if I leave them where they are, the vines will get squashed when someone opens the gate.
Maybe I’m just weird, but I LOVE the look of pumpkin vines. Love, love, love them!
The pallet garden. The strawberries are spreading like mad, the beans and Swiss chard are thriving but the celery is not looking so hot. Last year I planted celery in a pallet garden and it did great, but the pallet was kept in a shaded area and I think that has made all the difference. Oh well, lesson learned.
The garden boxes as a whole are doing really well. Lucy the Puggle dog likes to inspect them daily looking for fallen treats. For the most part she does a really good job of staying out of the beds. Unless of course I need her to dig a hole. 😉
The beans tepees are looking good! The squash plants we planted at the base are getting nice and plump and pretty soon the vines will be cascading down the hill {my favorite part}.
Right now we have green tomatoes, cucumbers, and strawberries, peppers, basil and a lemon tree growing in the greenhouse. I’ll try and snap a few more pictures to give you a better view of how everything is doing. And yes, thank you Lucy for photo bombing yet another picture. 😉
The cabbage {and potato} patch is coming along.
Potato towers, check. So far everything is still green. Go HERE for my latest potato tower update.
A view from the backyard deck.
Ahh the pumpkin patch! If you look closely you’ll see pumpkin vines starting to creep onto the lawn. It makes the HH crazy, but I LOVE IT!
Sadly, the raspberries are on their way out. We are now only getting about 2 pints of raspberries a day. Boo! Why can’t raspberry season last all summer long? I need to look into getting some ever-bearing canes. Do you have a variety you can recommend?
And last but not least, ye’ old container herb garden. I think I’m going to move it. Yep. This fall when I have some extra time I think I’ll try and find a place for it closer to the main garden. I just keep forgetting to water those stinkin’ containers. Thankfully, herbs are pretty forgiving.
Well, that’s what’s happening in our backyard garden, what’s going on in yours?
Anything exciting?

As a matter of fact, I had 2 beautiful 4 point bucks standing by my grape arbor (close to the house) just this Thursday. I went to get the camera, and the memory card was in the computer! By the time I got it loaded, they were gone.

I kept forgetting to water a couple of my container gardens also so I asked a couple friends to save some wine bottles for me…bet you are wondering why 🙂 I fill the bottles with water and turn them upside down and push them a little way into the soil. They will slowly release the water helping to keep the herbs from drying out. I love the look of the bottles because they come in different colors! Of course if you don’t like that idea, you can always buy some self watering bottles to put in the container as well.

Very clever Kim! Sounds like a great idea.

Is the rest of the garden on a drip or sprinkler system?
Most of my herbs are in an herb garden, but I have a few mints in containers.
Just a few days ago I traded some wooly apple mint, chocolate mint, and a peppermint, for a large lemon balm, and two kinds of oregano.
A lot of kinds of herbs taste better if they are drier than you would normally keep them. At least, that is what I read in Edward Smith’s The Vegetable Gardener’s Container Bible!
