While The Girl and I were off on our little adventure, the temps in the Seattle/Tacoma area skyrocketed into the 90’s. Wowza! I’m glad we missed it. I don’t know about you, but I like it around 65 degrees. That way I can wear jeans and a long sleeve shirt. I could never, in a million years, live in the dessert. Anything above 70 and I start to melt.
Right before we left, I noticed our two garden beds of green beans were flowering, and by the time we made it home, we had a boatload of beans. Because of all the zucchini drama surrounding yesterday, I wasn’t able to pick them, so this morning after breakfast, The Girl and I headed out the garden to see what we could harvest.
7 pounds 14 oz. Yeah Baby! I think I’m going to can them.
Which means I’m going to have to brake out the pressure canner. So if you don’t here from me within 3 hours or so, call the Fire Department, because I’ve blown up the house.
Wish me luck.

Which pressure canner do you use? I’ve determined I need to buy one but I can’t decide!

Hi Kayla, I just posted the how to green beans picture tutorial and added a link to the canner I use. 🙂

Thanks! 🙂

Nice! I am not having much luck with anything so far except our lettuce and chard.

Why not blanch and freeze them? I have a vacuum sealer, so once their frozen on trays I put them into vacuum seal bags and put them back in the freezer. They last a good long time.

I have the Presto canner which barely squeaks under the oversize microwave the landlord put in above the stove. Do you have your gauge tested each year? This is only my second season. I liken the experience to a shuttle launch. Have you done Dilly Beans? My kids love ’em.

What variety of beans are these?
Jules says
We are in the smack dab middle of canning beans too.

You have good arms, Miss Mavis – do you work out…or is that just from working hard on the garage? You’re all healthy looking. You go, girl!
LaToya says
LOL @ garage – I meant garden.
Mavis says
LOL… no, not really, I hate exercise.

I’m a firefighter/medic, and I would gladly kick in your door and carry you out. Although, I am on the East Coast (about an hour and a half drive from the Atlantic), so getting to you in a timely fashion during an emergency is not quite realistic.
No offense meant to the Handsome Husband. May he always be your hero.
Back to the topic, I end up freezing beans. Not to shy away from the pressure cooker, but because ‘wet beans’ just sort of turn me off. Kind of like cooked carrots. I’ll eat them out of the garden, rubbed on the grass to get the dirt off, but not cooked. It’s a texture thing.
I am glad I harvested zucchini and made some bread when I did. All my plants just ‘went towards the light’ over the past weekend. No evidence of bugs, they all just went blah. I’ve got other squashes all around them with no issues, but my zucs are gone.
