I stopped by the garden center last night and couldn’t help but notice all the ornamental cabbage for sale. I don’t know what it is about them but every fall I get sucked into buying a bunch of cabbage at the garden center for my front porch and window box.
They even had these gorgeous pumpkins for $0.99! How’s a girl to resist with a price like that?
Anywho, as I started planting I quickly realized I needed more plants. But what kind? The only choices right now are chrysanthemums {barf} or pansies. I mean if I get desperate I could go the purple pansy route, but I’m hoping YOU have some other suggestions.
What else should I be looking for that would go with the green, purple and orange theme I’ve got going on?
Any suggestion you have would be greatly appreciated. {Said the girl with OCD who won’t be happy until her garden box is stuffed full of fall goodness!} 😉

Dusty Miller?

If you would like it to last all winter you could use Pansies, orange or the multicolored with purple & orange. Some ornamental grasses , or colorful branches , even some dried grasses would look good! Its also a good time to throw some bulbs for spring!

How about snapdragons? They come in fall colors too. Maybe some orange and yellow ones with a little scarecrow as an accent?

Oh, good call!

I always love seeing curly parsley used in flower boxes and then you can snip pieces off for dinner too! Some sticks of orange berries might be pretty too, but I don’t know what you call them.

I love your suggestions!

Oh yum. Sorry, I have no advice for you. I have tried, and failed, out here in the desert Southwest, to grow cabbage, as well as other carnivifor(sp) veggies. I would LOVE to have a lovely head of cauliflower, cabbage, or broccol to eat. Feel free to send me any of those….. 🙂 i

Needs some red: red lettuce, red cabbage, *gasp* red mums (but I like them)

Red would look awesome there. Good call!

Grape vines and bittersweet vines with berries will fill in for free.

Vines scare me a bit because they have a tendency to grow wild so quickly!
Sandra DeGennaro says
How about some Heather or dwarf cypress. They would last
all winter and would grow more upright which would give the planting more interest
Mavis says
Genius. Thanks for the suggestion!

I think it’s beautiful! To add depth maybe try wandering jue (sp?). A really pretty deep dark purpley color leafy vine to hang over the sides maybe? Also a similar vine comes in a bright green almost neon which with the purple and orange looks awesome!

autumn sedum, hardy through frost. starts flowering only now anyways.

So pretty, Mavis! How about Black sweet potato vine or purple fountain grass?
It is truly beautiful as-is though–wish I had your green thumb!

Thanks for the suggestions and the praise!
