A big THANK YOU to everyone who has sent in their photographs and stories. I hope by sharing other peoples pictures and stories here on One Hundred Dollars a Month we can all have a rock star garden this summer. Keep them coming!
~Mavis
I am Becky living in upstate New York with my two younger kids living with me. I grown most of my own veggies and fruits, and can, dehydrate, freeze and enjoy local meats. I just got two rabbits for pets not for meat.
Chickens- where so I start? They start as cute little puff balls and turn into real chickens! The chickens started innocent enough with 6 chickens, one died so went to get a replacement, came home with 2 more. That was three years ago and now I’m up to 31! One beautiful rooster we hatched out and six new babies this years {red sex links}, silver and gold Wyandottes, 2 Araucanian, two black Marian that lay deep chocolate colored eggs that are tasty, 1 Australorp, the rest are red sex links and comets. Love them. We made a chicken tractor first so you could move it around. When that was too small, bought a shed from the Amish and moved the two together and enclosed part of the woods for them. I try to let them free range but, no way with foxes getting a couple of hens. Plus, the first year I didn’t know hens liked tomatoes or anything red… yup all my beautiful tomatoes gone. They are all petted and loved daily so when a couple get out they come running to be picked up and put back. The granddaughters love to help collect eggs and feed and pet the hens, when they visit from Alaska. Yes, they are quite the pets around here, even though I picked the variety that are both meat and layers they will live out a long life here. I even heat the coop when it is super cold at night!
Thanks,
Becky

I really love your chicken shed! Looks fantastic. Also like the way you have the feed and water hanging. I really have to do that! Chickens get everything so mucky!
What do you do with all the eggs??
