Check out these photos Melinda from Portland sent in of the garden she grew last summer. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE sharing all your pictures. Seeing is believing and anyone can do this. If you have pictures to share {and want to earn a $20 Amazon gift card see how to submit your photos below}
Here is what Melinda had to say:
My husband and I bought our house almost 2 years ago in Portland, OR. We are on a small city lot and have transformed the front and side yard into food farms. Our other side yard houses our chicken coop for our egg laying hens.
We put in raised beds and around the perimeter of our yard we built a fence which we grow peas, beans, and cucumbers on.
We grow vertically as much as possible since we are on a small plot. Last summer we also carved out space in the street strip (area between sidewalk and street) for 8 artichoke plants and a fig tree.
All of the grow areas are amended with homemade compost rich with nitrogen, thanks to some help from our chickens.
We start everything from seed in either newspaper rolled cups (formed from the end of a tabasco bottle) or in re-purposed plastic containers So far I have saved seed from favas, sweet peas, spinach, sunflowers, radish, and hot peppers. I look forward to saving more seed this year.
Our favorite goods from the garden are beer battered squash blossoms, bacon wrapped asparagus and garlic scapes, sauteed fava beans, winter squash with fried sage, Greek salad, and fresh eggs.
Way to go Melinda! Your garden is awesome and thanks for sharing your photos.

Beautiful garden Melinda. I like that you turned your parking strip into a garden. I did the same thing years ago when I lived in north Portland. I also start all my seeds and have quite a few (greens) already. Going to plant peas outside this week and my tomatoes indoors. I live out in Milwaukie now with a big lot for all my gardening needs.

Hi, there. I’ve been interested in raising chickens but I have three cats and a dog. Is this possible? This kind of hampers the free-range aspect of having chickens…..

Nice! I’m in Portland as well, so it’s always fun to see what the “neighbors” are up to.
