A big THANK YOU to everyone who has sent in their photographs and stories. I hope by sharing other peoples pictures and stories here on One Hundred Dollars a Month we can all have a rock star garden this summer. Keep them coming!
Check out this story and photos from Dale who’s had a drainage issue in his garden:
After doing a lot of research on how to improve my garden, I decided to install raised beds. With lots of inspiration from your site and many others, I got the project under way this last February.
As you can see from the first of these photos, drainage has been an issue in the past. This year’s record rain fall had me wading through 6 to 8 inches of mud while I set up the raised beds and got them filled.
At the same time I constructed a seed starting station in my rec-room.
At this time I have {8} 4’ x 16’ beds, {2} 4’ x 14’ beds and a 2’ border bed around half of the garden.
I installed irrigation to all the beds and can finally start enjoying the veggies coming out of the garden.
Dale got busy planting over NINETY different varieties of seeds. To say he’s going to have a plethora to harvest is an understatement!
If you would like to have your garden, chicken coop or something you’ve made featured on One Hundred Dollars a Month, here’s what I’m looking for:
- Your Garden Pictures and Tips – I’d especially like to see your garden set ups, growing areas, and know if you are starting seeds indoors this year. If so, show me some picture of how you are going about it.
- Your Chicken and Chicken Related Stories – Coops, Chicks, Hen’s, Roosters, Eggs, you name it. If it clucks, send us some pictures to share with the world.
- Cool Arts & Crafts – Made from your very own hands with detailed {and well photographed} pictures and instructions.
- Your pictures and stories about your pets. The more pictures and details the better.
- Garage Sale, Thrift Store and Dumpster Diving pictures and the stories behind the treasures you found including how much you paid for them.
If I feature your pictures and the stories behind them on One Hundred Dollars a Month, I will send you a $20.00 gift card to the greatest store in the world: Amazon.com.

Can we know where (what state) the people live in who write to you? There might be something that would be more pertinent to my particular area (5000′ in CO), although they are always interesting. Just a thought.

Going to copy your seed starting/light station. Very clever.

My garden is located just outside Olympia Wa.
If you are going to build the seed station, I would recommend putting in a center leg for better support.

This is a PVC plant light stand which you can make yourself. This plant stand has 3 shelves. One could be made with only 2 shelves if you are not starting that many seedlings. Each shelf will hold 4 standard (10″ x 20″) nursery flats. Cost to construct this unit is approximately $100 to $120 including the flourescent shop lights, but no shelving material. This unit is narrow enough that you can use the nursery flats to hold your plants and so no shelves are actually needed.
You will need:
• 10′ lengths of 1″ schedule 40 PVC (7 to 8 pieces)
• (40) – 1″ tees
• Hand held PVC cutting tool (it’s worth it)
• Tape measure
• Sharpie marker (or similar marker – pencil will work)
• (6)narrow flourescent shop light fixtures holding 2 tubes each
and having long cords
• (1)electrical power bar with 6 outlet plugs
• Automatic timer for ease of turning lights on and off automatically
Cut the pieces as follows:
• (16) – 19-1/2″ horizontal long pieces
• (16) – 3″ horizontal short pieces
• (12) – 14″ vertical side pieces
• (12) – 15″ horizontal cross pieces
• (4) – 5″ legs
BELOW PLEASE FIND SOME NEW DRAWINGS. THANKS TO L. BURHANS WHO HAS SO GRACIOUSLY CREATED THESE EXCELLENT DRAWINGS! I’M SURE THESE DIRECTIONS AND DRAWINGS WILL HELP YOU MAKE YOUR PLANT STAND.
