{Betty & Margo, 2 hens on the Isle of Man sent in by reader Angie from The Cinnamon Coach}
I love to get mail from my readers. Lately, I’ve been getting some pretty awesome pictures, recipes, gardening stories and chicken goodness in the mail. And you know what I’ve decided? My readers are so fun and wise, I should ask for their help. So, as things start to get busier out in the garden, I would like to feature some of your ideas to help ease the load. I can’t do it alone–I neeeeed you!
{I vote we all move to the Isle of Man and live with Angie. Her children are all grown and I’m sure we could help out around her place in exchange for seeing that awesome view every day.}
Here’s what I’m looking for:
- Your Garden Pictures and Tips – I’d especially like to see your garden set ups, growing areas, and know if you are starting seeds indoors this year. If so, show me some picture of how you are going about it.
- Your Chicken and Chicken Related Stories – Coops, Chicks, Hen’s, Roosters, Eggs, you name it. If it clucks, send us some pictures to share with the world.
- Cool Arts & Crafts – Made from your very own hands with detailed {and well photographed} pictures and instructions.
- Your pictures and stories about your pets. The more pictures and details the better {we need at least 3-5 good quality photos}
- Garage Sale, Thrift Store and Dumpster Diving pictures and the stories behind the treasures you found including how much you paid for them.
If I feature your pictures and the stories behind them on One Hundred Dollars a Month I will send you a $20.00 gift card to the greatest store in the world: Amazon.com {take some deep breaths and contain your excitement}.
Things to keep in mind when you send me your stuff:
- I have major OCD. You do not have to be a professional photographer, but your photos do need to be clear and well lit or I won’t be able to use them.
- All photos must be original, and they must have been taken by YOU.
- I won’t be able to use or get back to everyone–but just assume that whatever you sent in was awesome.
- Be sure to include a little information about yourself, like how long you’ve been gardening, raising chickens, ect. Also, please include your name and what state or country you are from.
- If you have a blog and would like me to link back to it, please let me know, I’d be happy too.
- Ideally I’d prefer about 5 pictures per submission, so the more the merrier just in case I do not select them all.
Okay, peeps, that about covers it. Whether you submit something or not, thank you from the bottom of my heart for visiting, leaving comments, and sending me emails. I could have never imagined when I started this blog back in 2009 it would have turned into what it is today. You.Are.Awesome.
~Mavis

I sent this link to my mom…she will laugh…solely because her name is Margo and her best friend is Betty! Actually come to think of it, they are like 2 hens! teehee! 🙂
Mavis says
That is awesome!
Angie says
Ha ha ha! Hope your Mom doesn’t have two more friends called Lucy and Grace – because I now have two more hens!
Evonne says
I love the fence in the second picture; I wonder what kind of wood it’s made of?
Angie says
Hi Evonne
That fence was made of hazel and was woven to form a fence known as a hurdle. I say ‘was’ because sadly it is no more! As you can see we are fairly exposed up here and the fence lasted a couple of seasons before it simply blew down! We now have a white picket fence which is a better windbreak.

This is a great idea. We can all learn from each other. When I get my garden in the ground this year it will only be my 3rd year of gardening so I am always up for advice, little tricks, and how to do things. Does anyone know if there is some sort of garden planner to follow on when I am suppose to plant what and when. I usually just grab what is at the stores and use that as a guide. I am in Texas and the zone that I am in for planting is 8A and the same site I found that out there was also a Climate Zone map and a Heat Map Zone as well. I had NO CLUE they even existed lol.. My climate zone is 33- North Central Texas and Oklahoma Eastward toteh Appalachian Foot Hills. Our growing season is Mid April – October. The Heat Zone is 8 so the temps for us are 90-120 or in zone 9 we are at 120-150 average. Our last frost in the Fort Worth are is March 11-20. Fort Worth is the biggest City to us.
Looking forward to learning more about gardening and seeing the future pics, recipes, ect from all you lovely ladies in the group.

Hey Deanna,
This is my first year to garden also, I am in Garland, just outside of Dallas. So, bout the same weather! My cucumbers are gone wild!!!! Already had to make refrigerator pickles to use them up in time. The cantaloupe are about fist size. The tomatoes are taking off now that we have lots of heat. The neighborhood squirrel is getting the strawberries now that I took down the protective recycled house screens. What did you find grows well in our climate??

You mentioned recipes — I make a buttermilk bread. I let it knead and rise in the bread machine, but bake it in the oven.
2 cups flour (total of 4 cups of flour will be used)
2 Tblsp. yeast
1/2 tsp. salt
3 Tblsp. sugar
1 egg
4 Tblsp. buttermilk powder
1-1/4 cup water
2 cups flour
I initially put 2 cups flour in the breadmaker, then yeast, salt, sugar, egg, buttermilk powder and half of the water. I then put the other 2 cups of flour in and the remaining water. I put it for 50 minutes of kneading and rising. I then put in a greased loaf pan and bake for 35-45 minutes depending on your oven at 375F. When done, I put the loaf pan upside down on a cooling rack and pull off the loaf pan. Let cool as it’s easier to slice when cooled.

So great to see those photos from a little while ago now! I now have two more hens, little black one called Lucy and a mainly white one called Grace (a.k.a. Cushy)
Maybe I should send you some pictures of them too? The chicken Garden looked amazing last year with marigolds, orange monbretia and white and blue borage.
My two original girls did a fab job of turning over my veggie beds – such that I did not have even ONE slug!
Keep on keeping on Mavis – and make those travel plans to come to the Isle of Man !
Warm regards
Angie

Oh,my goodness! That is so beautiful! Angie (or anyone else) I would love to know how to make that wattle fence! Mavis, I think you should send her a gift card if she writes a tutorial for us! 🙂
Angie says
Ha ha Lauren. I had it made for us. Sadly though it did not stand up to the rigours of life on the Isle of Man and has been recycled and we now have a picket fence – not that it keeps the chickens out! They just do their own sweet thing!

I shared a story about our cat Buddy on my blog a couple of months ago about him going up the chimney. I had never heard of another cat doing that and neither had our vet. Always something new with pets! Here is the link and a couple of pictures.

If you can fit in my suitcase, you can come with us to the Isle of Mann in October of this year. My husband and I have been invited to travel with friends whose parents have a timeshare that includes the Isle of Mann!! All we have to do is come up with plane tickets and money for food and fun expenses. Our last big vacation was Ireland 8 years ago, so I’m ready to go. 🙂

Hey thanks for the invite!! 🙂

Mavis, Are you looking for never been blogged before content? Or can it be something I’ve blogged about over on my blog: allthingsfee.blogspot.com?
Would love to contribute!
