Pickety bits. My husband had a issue with the jalapeno spread and a cheddar cheese spread in the olive tray. Which is sort of funny seeing how he has never put a tray of pickety bits together. Maybe I’ll have him assemble the next one and see just how artfully he arranges the food.
Mississippi Pot Roast. My husband LOVES this meal.
The leftovers from a Mississippi pot roast make the best Shepard’s Pie. {Basically add a little flour to the leftover pot roast liquid to make a gravy, add leftover pot roast meat, frozen peas, corn and carrots and top it with mashed potatoes.
Taco Tuesday
The best chocolate cookies {a care package for} for Monkey Boy.
Date day. This week it involved lunch at a country store and an old estate.
Food wise, there were some delicious meals, but honesty, nothing new or crazy exciting. While I was at the fabric store though I did notice they were asking $1.50 {!!!!} for a packet of M & M’s. Can you believe it? I remember when candy was a QUARTER! I feel like I’m getting old. Also, the gauntlet you have to walk to get to the registers these days at some stores, is insane.
When people leave dishes in the sink when the dishwasher is 25 inches away. It makes me sorta crazy.
And leaving empty containers on DISPLAY. What is up with that? It makes you wonder…. Do they think they’re doing you a favor by saying “We are out of XYZ…. and here is empty box to prove it.” Or do you think it’s more like, hey, would you mind taking this to the recycle bins in the garage for me….. Because you know, it’s just so far away. Or maybe, just maybe they think you enjoy picking up after other people. You know, like it’s your job or something. 😉
Ahhhh Monday. Let’s do this!!

So glad to see that my family is not the only ones who can’t put dishes in the dishwasher or find the garbage/recycling!
Sue P. says
Or put a new roll of toilet paper on the holder…. Lol
Mavis Butterfield says
I found 3 empty cardboard rolls of tp under the bathroom sink yesterday. I just don’t get it.
Vicki says
At least your family does take the empty container out of the frig/pantry. My husband leaves a smidgen in the container, then puts it back. That way he doesn’t have to deal with it period. I’ve told him that as long as I see a container in frig/pantry I’m not replacing that item!
Lisa Millar says
I am laughing in that rueful eyerolling way!!
Finding unrinsed containers of milk hanging about… blah and erk!! Not to mention the specialised container of tea bag rubbish next to the kettle because the 3 foot walk to the bin is just a bit too much to ask haha
Ahhhh – homes all over the world are the same. 😀
PS choc chip cookies look fab!
Deborah says
LOL So sorry. I can’t help but laugh. I can remember when some candies were a nickel. And I got $2 for a week for lunch. I could eat and have 50 cents a week left over. Of course this was in the late 60s. Yes, I’m a tad past retirement age. Yeah! I made it.

I grew up in a small town in Massachusetts where there was a place called The News Room. They had a large wood and glass display case with penny candy on the bottom shelf and .05 items on the top shelf.
The owner knew all the kids in town and would just have you help yourself (in the back of the counter) and leave your change on top of the display. Wonderful memories!!!
Mavis Butterfield says
I miss places like that.
Patty Ryan says
Can I get an AMEN! For the love of all that is holy people! My family does the same thing! A few to add to the list is placing the new roll of toilet paper on top of the empty roll and putting garbage in the recycle bin. Sheesh!
Sarah WILLS says
If you are growing jalapenos this year, try making some jalapeno jelly – oh my gosh, such a great addition to the meat & cheese board – it is delish!
Wendy M says
My husband does the same thing with empty containers. It drives me bonkers! It’s definitely a “we’re out of this” thing for him!
Lissa says
The toilet paper thing drives me nuts!! I read a great saying on a Navy Academy blog: Don’t put it down, put it away!!.
What was the issue with the pickety bit plate? Looks beautiful. Were the wrong things touching? haha
Leslie says
I was staying with family friends for a bit when I was in their area, and the dad/husband did the funniest thing. He put an empty jaw of peanut butter on the window sill with a sticky note that said “we are almost about to run out of peanut butter. Please buy more.” For some reason, I thought that was so funny. Then again, I’m not married to him.
Helen in Meridian says
As well as the long march at Joann’s with over priced candy, there is an even longer gauntlet and overpriced candy and drinks at The Goodwill. Like you saved a little, here spend your savings on ice cream bars, candy and soda drinks.
Jessica says
Old Navy.. NO.. I have no need to buy candy or soda while waiting to buy jeans…
Rose says
My hubby & son leave the empty containers on the counter.
But if I leave something on the counter. I get hounded by Hubby, what’s it doing there, what are you gonna use it for, its still there. Man nothing gets my eye twitching more…LoL!
Sue says
Ok, that’s a man thing, can’t say we are out of something just leave the empty’s on the counter as a message. Just got to love them anyway….men.
Nancy says
Hi Mavis….is that a soapstone sink you have? I have had soapstone in two different houses. And while I love it, I have water spots around the kitchen sink and it looks pretty horrible. Do you put anything on your soapstone? I have done wax, and then I tried mineral oil, yada yada…any good ideas?
Teresa says
What about not washing the toothpaste down the drain when they (he) is done brushing? That’s the one that gets me. Oh well, I’m SURE I do annoying things too. 🙂

What is the black stuff in the bowl? The red looks like salsa, which I wouldn’t have thought of pairing with salami & olives.
Gigi says
Looks like olive tapenade. Well at least that’s what I would have included.

My mom and I have taken to taking pictures of the piles of trash/dishes my husband and dad leave around. We send them to each other through text just to show each other we are not alone. LOL! Drives me crazy!!
Lace Faerie says
As long we are on the topic of things that annoy us wives…how about unwrapping something and putting the wrapper in the sink!! OMG the trash can is only 12” below that very same spot!! Open the cabinet door on drop it!
Helen Thompson says
Yes my husband leaves egg shells in the sink when he’s making his weekend eggs, instead of opening the door and putting it in the bin that is right underneath the sink!

My kids leave the box on top of the garbage can in the kitchen that holds cardboard. They have to disassemble the box. That is it. And still they don’t. They always leave plastic containers on the kitchen counters. No one wants to step outside 20 feet to the driveway where the plastic recyclable bin is.
Brenda says
…finding USED Q-Tips behind the couch, gum stuck to the wall behind the couch, EMPTY boxes left in freezer and cupboard, spoons and MY Yeti lid found in boy’s gross bathroom drawer….shall I go on??!!
tracy says
Mavis, do you have soapstone sink and countertops? I love the look of them. We are getting ready to remodel our kitchen, we are debating between soapstone and quartz. What are your thoughts on them?
Kristina says
I don’t have a sink, as I opted for an undermount stainles sink, but I can say something about our soapstone counters. They are cool and have a lovely feeling under your hands, almost soft. They are very dense, so they don’t absorb anything, but they are also quite soft, so you can dent them with a fingernail. They conduct heat well, so you can put a hot pan directly down on them without cracking the counter. Black soapstones like I have are actually naturally a light grey, oiled or waxed to turn it black. I use a beeswax salad bowl conditioner on my counters every two or three months, and touch up spots in between. Some people use mineral oil. In places where water sits, like around the sink and faucets, it can turn white or light grey, and this is merely the wax wearing off sooner. If you are a person who is getting new counters and wants them to remain pristine forever, this is not the surface for you. It patinas, the edges get nicked up (can be sanded with very fine grit sandpaper). But our decision was to have something that was hard to destroy, rather than perpetually perfect. Hope that helps.
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes, we have soapstone counters and I really like them and highly recommend them if you won’t freak out if there are imperfections in the stone. I LOVE the dark color. I believe the previous owner treated the counters with mineral oil {there was a container of it under the sink} but so far we haven’t done anything other than wipe them down. Over the years we’ve had ceramic tile, granite tile, laminate, granite, quartz {the HOA House} and soapstone counters. Soapstone and granite are my favorite.

As the only one around here brave enough to stand up for “the men” when the women are enjoying sounding off, my HH used to leave empty containers out so I would know we needed to get more. That was in contrast to when he’d empty something, throw it away, and not say anything … so I discovered we were out right when I needed it.
I SOLVED this problem completely. Yes, yes, I did.
I made up a chart that corresponded, aisle by aisle, with the grocery store we usually use. I listed things we normally get and left blank spaces in each section for the oddball stuff. It hangs on the fridge. Now when HH empties something, he religiously throws out/rinses out the container AND marks it on the list. Yes, yes he does. I think the chart speaks to his OCD.
This has not, however, solved the dishes in the sink problem.
And I suspect it wouldn’t work as well with teenagers, but mine are out of the house so it’s not my problem. 🙂
Lisa Millar says
If there were awards given out for this kind of thing I reckon you would be in the running for Grand Champion!! Thats so Awesome!! lol
I might think of doing a smaller version of your chart! Thanks for sharing!!
Julia says
I think your pickity platers look great.
Lissa says
How’s Monkey boy been doing in the cookery department? Catching on? Or still going for corn dog and other junk food? He’ll like the cookies.
Diane says
Just out of curiosity, do you cook the potatoes, carrots and mushrooms in with the Mississippi pot roast? Thanks!
Mavis Butterfield says
I toss in the vegetables about 1 hour before serving.
Mel says
We have our share of piled up boxes and cartons because we do not have trash or recycling pickup in our area, but in terms of knowing when to buy more of something, we use an app called Out of Milk where we both have access to the same lists. We can each add things as we find we run out, BUT we can also see if the other person already picked up something. And, if one of us happens to stop by the store, we can see at a glance what else we might need. It makes it harder to forget to bring the grocery list too.
We also created a second list that includes the type of air filters, light bulbs, etc. that we use so we don’t have to look it up every time we need those things.
