Holy cannoli’s people… can you believe it’s July already? This year is flying by and the weather here in Western Washington has been perfect for gardening lately. Hot and muggy pretty much sums it up if you ask me. 😉
We are almost done harvesting strawberries for the season and are looking forward to the next best thing… RASPBERRIES. Wahooo! Gardening is rad, isn’t it?

Trees and Shrubs
Trees and shrubs should be pretty low maintenance this month, other than needing a bit more water. Â All trees and shrubs benefit from deeper, less frequent waterings, rather than a daily light sprinkle. Â Watch for pests, fungus, and diseases this month and stop them before they take hold. Â Mulching is important this month. Â It will help your plants deal with the stress of the heat.
Weed and Pest Control
Weeding is especially important this month, because weeds will compete in your garden beds for valuable nutrients. Â Continue to keep an eye on pests, especially on the tomatoes.
Lawn Care
Try raising the blade on your mower this month. Â The longer cut grass will protect the roots of the grass from the heat.
These garden chores are based on my Zone 8a Seattle/Tacoma WA location. Find your garden zone HERE.

I find that amazing. I guess I never really looked at the entire zone map. I am about as far away from you as I can get (Duplin county, NC) in the US, in the South (hot and humid!), and yet we have the same zone for gardening!

That is pretty cool!

Wanna hear something ridiculous? I’m in Wisconsin and we had HORRIBLE snow and cold this year. There is a spot where part of our city dumped snow that literally JUST melted a couple days ago. Yep, there were a couple inches of snow in that spot in July! Our gardens are doing great, but just down the road there was snow!

Wow, that’s wild! I’m in Wisconsin too and our snow has been all gone since late March or early April, but I’ve heard stories like yours before. Temps on the cool side through June (I’m near Lake Michigan) affected the lawn, peonies and some shrubs; everything else progressed normally.
