I just finished watching several Lucy Worsley programs on YouTube on the subject of the biggest fibs in British history, all of which made the point that historians write for their own times, and most interpret events of the past through that lens. Probably the best known example is the Tudor-initiated bashing of Richard III, which even included William Shakespeare in the role of the major propagandist with his “historical” plays. I am not sure that Wikipedia is necessarily the answer for everything, but the process of allowing many to take the pen in recording what happened would certainly moderate against those who want to put forward their own spin as the one true history.
