One Hundred Dollars a Month

I am your typical housewife living in high maintenance suburbia. I have a handsome husband, 2 kids and a flock of pet chickens. I try and feed my family with $100 a month. With the help of coupons, gardening and bartering I am able to squeeze the most out of our grocery budget and still manage to have a little fun along the way.

Black Fatty, our Australorp is the biggest one we’ve ever had. She’s so large, I want to weigh her. She has got to be at least 10 pounds by now and is a very protective {and smart!} bird. If you’re thinking about getting a flock of your own next spring, The Girl and I cannot recommend Australorps enough. They are such loving birds.

Martha, our Lavender Orpington is probably number two in line for the heaviest bird and sweetest bird in our flock. She is a total love bug, always waiting by the door of the chicken run for a little affection.  

With the cold weather, I can’t help but make our feathered friends batches of warm oatmeal at least twice a week. I haven’t quite figured out what I’m going to do in winter about their water {keeping it warm} but if you live in an area with freezing temps maybe you can chime in and tell me what I need so we’ll be prepared.

The garden. It’s done for the year.

With the exception of a few Swiss chard plants that are trying to hang in there. At the beginning of spring I was totally convinced I’d have a couple of cold frames set up, or at the very least, something growing in the greenhouse by now. But I am ready for a rest. 😉 Maybe next winter.

Yesterday the HH removed all the window screens and put the storm windows on. A few of the screens are a bit on the iffy side and he doesn’t think they’ll last another summer, so GUESS WHO has their first winter project lined up? HE DOES!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

I’ve already got a ton of my own projects and re-screening windows is totally not one of them. It’s a guy project. Right? It’s right up there with checking for things that go bump in the night, setting rat traps and…. and….

Snow blowing.

That man ASKED ME if I wanted him to show me how to use his new snow blower. Can you believe that? Does he think I’m crazy? I was like, NO, why would I want to learn how to do use a snow blower…. are you nuts? I have ZERO desire to learn how to use a snow blower. Wanna know why? Because I don’t want to be the one out there at 5 am BLOWING SNOW…. That’s HIS JOB. Does he want to learn how to sew or how to trim a candle wick properly? I don’t think so.

So I’ll be inside making hot chocolate, taking care of Lucy and tending the wood stove thank you very much. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Guys… they’re a funny lot.

Winter… It’s just around the corner…. and I’m EXCITED!!!

Hello Wednesday! Miss Lucy has a mani-pedi scheduled and darrrrling, it is always the highlight of her day. Especially since her vet gives her a cookie every time she visits. I suppose for a dog, it’s kind of like a bakery visit. Only they touch your paws for some strange reason before they let you have a cookie. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Sugarbush Cheese and Maple Farm in Woodstock, Vermont ~ Plus a Cheesy Giveaway ~

Yesterday, the HH and I headed out to the charming town of Woodstock, Vermont for a look around. I had first learned of Woodstock, Vermont a few weeks ago when we were in Bath, New Hampshire visiting the The Brick Store and happened to notice a rack of flannel shirts they were selling made by Vermont Flannel.

And well, you know the internet, one thing lead to another and soon I was on the Vermont Flannel website and noticed they had a store in Woodstock, Vermont and I was like HEY…. Let’s go there for our next date day. And so we did. 😉 Because that’s what we do now. We drive around to random towns for no particular reason.

But this isn’t a story about Vermont Flannel! Or even really Woodstock, Vermont.

It’s more about how I spotted covered bridge off the side of the main road and made the HH do a u-turn just so we could drive across the covered bridge and then how I spotted a bright yellow sign for maple syrup and CHEESE and made him follow the signs up a long and winding road until we found a farm in what seemed like the middle of nowhere.

At first he was a little hesitant, like maybe we would be knocking on someone’s door or something but then we noticed a large dirt parking lot….

With horses and goats and even a few rabbits off to the side.

There were even walking trails {to the maple trees, I suppose that’s a big hit during the sugaring season with the tourists {because we’re not tourists, right?}. Yada yada yada….

Once inside we were shocked to find a full blown cheese making/wrapping operation going on.

We weren’t even 2 seconds in the door when we were greeted by a nice lady offering us cheese and maple syrup samples. Which of course we sampled nearly all of them because you know, we wouldn’t want to seem ungracious or anything.

Not only were there cheese and maple syrup samples, but in the next room there were all sorts of jams, mustard, cheese spreads and sausage to try as well. Seriously, the place put Costco’s afternoon samples to shame. And to make a long story short, we left with a giant sack of cheese!

And the cheese from Sugarbush Cheese and Maple Farm in Woodstock, Vermont was SO GOOD, not only do I want you to stop by and visit the nice people there {and sample their cheese!} when you are in that neck of the woods, but I want to give you a chance to win a box of their delicious farm fresh cheese as well.

Hello Tuesday! Things are getting downright chilly around here. Luckily though, the heat from the wood stove is doing a nice job of finding its way upstairs and it’s still about 60 degrees up there at night. We still need to get the storm windows on, buy a snow rake, ice melt for the walkways and find some sort of down hat with cozy ear flaps, but other than that, I think we’re ready for winter!!! AND SNOW {my favorite!}. My friend Heather thinks I am totally delusional though and that the novelty will wear off. Ha!

I guess we’ll find out, right?
