One Hundred Dollars a Month

I am your typical housewife living in high maintenance suburbia. I have a handsome husband, 2 kids and a flock of pet chickens. I try and feed my family with $100 a month. With the help of coupons, gardening and bartering I am able to squeeze the most out of our grocery budget and still manage to have a little fun along the way.

A few weeks ago while the HH and I were exploring mid coast Maine we stopped off at the Muscongus Bay Lobster Company for lunch.  Before we had even started on this journey to find the best lobster shack in New England, I was secretly on the hunt for a lobster shack on a dock, with lobster boats and lobster pots nearby with picnic tables to enjoy your lunch on out in the open air.

Muscongus Bay Lobster was all that and a bag of chips. The only thing missing was a few handsome fishermen unloading the day’s catch on the dock. 

This place not only gets five stars for scenery, but according to the HH the boiled lobster, and clams were big and tasty. They even included a mug of broth for dipping the clams in. I had the Caesar salad of course… and well, it tasted like a Caesar salad. 😉

It kind of makes you want to buy a boat and live on the sea. In the summertime at least. Winter, not so much. After having a wood stove in the house to keep me warm in the winter…. I don’t think I’d ever want to live without one again.

Check out the nets! I wonder how many lobster dinners have been boiled in those. Kind of cool if you ask me. It almost makes you want to wear one of those fisherman sweaters and walk around in muck boots, and talk in a heavy accent, doesn’t it?

1 boiled lobster, 1 pound of steamers and an ear of corn. The HH gives the Muscongus Bay Lobster Company in Round Pond, Maine a five out of 5 stars. It’s the perfect place to stop by for a bite to eat, or to bring out of town guests.

Meal Planning and Grocery Shopping Trips – Week 33 of 52

Mississippi Pot Roast. Pretty much the easiest and tastiest way to cook a pot roast on the planet.

And the leftovers make a delicious Shepard’s pie the next day.

Cucumbers and tomatoes… are you swimming in them? My favorite way to use them up these days has been to chop them up and pour a little Ken’s Steak House lite Caesar dressing over them.

Garden fresh green beans sauted in a little olive oil with a few cashews thrown in at the last minute.

Beans and weenies with cherry cola jello salad and macaroni salad from ALDI.

Fresh corn and John Boy peaches from the local fruit stand.

Tuna casserole. I used a can of cream of chicken instead of cream of celery soup. I don’t know about you, but I love meals that provide leftovers for lunch the next day.

The best meatballs I’ve ever had. Date day at the local Italian take out place. We went for lunch and skipped dinner because we were so full. 😉 I think I’m going to order a pan of their chicken Parmesan when Mrs. HB comes to visit me this weekend.

Local Produce Stand: $15.31 {HOLY COW MAN!} 🙂

Corn was $0.75 an ear and peaches and nectarines were $2.29 a pound. Someone mentioned they paid $0.10 an ear for corn in Texas. Talk about a price difference.
