One Hundred Dollars a Month

I am your typical housewife living in high maintenance suburbia. I have a handsome husband, 2 kids and a flock of pet chickens. I try and feed my family with $100 a month. With the help of coupons, gardening and bartering I am able to squeeze the most out of our grocery budget and still manage to have a little fun along the way.

We first learned about Morse’s Sauerkraut when the HH and I stopped for lunch at Red’s Eats in Wiscasset, Maine on one of our weekly date days a few months ago. Red’s served Morse’s sauerkraut on their weenies, and after just one bite, we were hooked.

Holly cow man, the world would be such a better place if more towns were filled with hometown deli’s, country stores and REAL honest to goodness simple food offerings than fast food shacks and mini marts serving corn dogs and gallon sized servings of soda.

Now I’m not a big sauerkraut person, in fact I’ve been known to turn up my nose to the stuff you find in a can or sitting on the shelf in your typical grocery store. But SERIOUSLY FRESH sauerkraut that’s hand packed and made in small batches? YES PLEASE! Give me a fork, I’ll eat it out of the jar.

Cabbage, salt and sugar…. Just three ingredients. Who knew it could taste so good? Morse’s Sauerkraut in Waldoboro, Maine also packs their own pickles {several varieties actually} and although we didn’t go home with a jar of pickles…. I know we will be grabbing a jar {or two} the next time we go back.

The pastrami and corned beef? Freakin’ fantastic!

We loved our visit to Morse’s Sauerkraut in Waldoboro, Maine so much, I think we are going to have to take my parents there this fall when they come for a visit. My Dad, who is a BIG sauerkraut and German weenies fan, would love the place, I’m sure of it.

There is even a small dining area that I hear serves wonderful deli sandwiches and weenies. This place is oozing with New England charm.

Check out those cabbage pom poms hanging from the ceiling!

Morse’s Sauerkraut and Deli has everything you could possible need to put together a nice picnic or a gift basket. They even offer mail order for Pete’s sake.

An entire self dedicated to mustard. You gotta love it.

So… bottom line… If you ever find your self anywhere near Waldoboro, Maine make sure and stop by Morse’s Sauerkraut for rations. You won’t be disappointed with the place, or the food. I promise.

Hello Tuesday! On the agenda for today: Wait around for the oil company to show up and inspect the oil tank and fill it with heating oil. This will be the first time we’ve filled up our tank {the previous owners filled it up just before we moved it} and the current rate is $2.52 a gallon. I have no idea if that is a good price to pay for heating oil or not, but filling up the tank in the summer seemed like a smart thing to do as I would think the demand {and price} for heating oil would be lower now, than in the fall.

Do you buy heating oil? Do you remember what you paid the last time you filled your tank? Curious minds want to know. Oh, and the chicken coop…. We’re getting there. 😉 Hopefully I can get it painted in the next few days.

Ahhh Tuesday. Let’s do this!

Meal Planning and Grocery Shopping Trips – Week 29 of 52

Looking back over the dinner pictures I took this past week…. I’d say we ate pretty well. 😉 I didn’t even know I made so many things from scratch until I was loading the photos for this week’s show and tell meal post. Tuna casserole. We are big fans in this house. The Girl and I even like it COLD the next morning for breakfast.

ALDI meatloaf. Personally, I think it has too much of a sausage taste to it but the HH and The Girl like it so at $4.99 a box, I’ll keep on buying it. Plus, it’s great for a busy weeknight because all you have to do is pop it in the oven and dinner is ready in an hour. And hey, check it out, I didn’t burn the bread sticks this time.

Homemade refried beans… Have you ever tried making them? You should.

Not only are refried beans quick and easy to make, they taste waaaaaay better than canned. This time I omitted the salsa. You can find the recipe HERE.

Homemade chicken enchiladas. Yum-O!

The chocolate lava cake mix from King Arthur Flour is the bomb diggety! I picked it up on my last trip to the King Arthur Flour Campus and I wouldn’t hesitate to grab another box the next time we are there. King Arthur Flour also has a couple of chocolate lava cake recipes online as well if you’re interested in trying one out.

Ham sandwich, {ALDI} potato salad and Cape Cod Potato Chips for the man building the chicken coop. He wanted to know where the dill pickle was…. Because apparently all sandwiches should be served with a dill pickle {Insert eye roll here}.

Homemade strawberry shortcake with homegrown strawberries. This is the recipe I used, and it’s the best shortcake recipe on the planet! {I can’t imagine ever using another one}.

Sunday dinner and a movie. Pork roast, Brussels sprouts, {ALDI} boxed rice mix and Red Lobster Cheddar Biscuits. Have you tried those Red Lobster biscuits before? They are fantastic! I think I’ve seen the big box of mix at Costco before but I’m not sure if they are still selling it. ALDI had the smaller boxes in stock last month when I did my big monthly stock up trip.

Some weeks I make good stuff…. and other weeks it’s pickety bits for days.  🙂

The HH made the door for the chicken coop last night, the humidity level outside is 98%, I just ate a chocolate lava cake for breakfast and Gladys Kravitz is glue to the window. Today…. It’s going to rock. Just you wait and see.
