One Hundred Dollars a Month

I am your typical housewife living in high maintenance suburbia. I have a handsome husband, 2 kids and a flock of pet chickens. I try and feed my family with $100 a month. With the help of coupons, gardening and bartering I am able to squeeze the most out of our grocery budget and still manage to have a little fun along the way.

Yesterday we took Miss Lucy to the vet for her injection {she has to have one every 25 days now for the rest of her life because she has Addison’s disease} and the Dr. said all her blood tests {that were taken last Friday} came back normal. Which or course was wonderful news. 🙂 🙂 🙂

We moved her favorite papasan chair back downstairs around noon because we had a MAJOR thunder and lighting storm {with an insane amount of rain} which lasted well into the evening. The chair, it’s her happy place, and I suppose once the weather turns this winter, we’ll have it parked right in front of the wood stove for her too. 😉 Dogs, they are just the sweetest things ever.

Gardening in New England – Sweet Potatoes, Lilies as Far as the Eye Can See, and I’m No Corn Farmer…. That’s for Sure

Have you grown sweet potatoes before? How do these look to you? Am I going to have a crate of sweet potatoes to harvest this fall? Will there be loads of them to last us through the winter? I planted 50 slips, and I don’t know much about sweet potatoes but I think these are looking pretty good. My friend Zoë in Pennsylvania though, said hers are about 4 times as bushy right now.

Check out those dried bean plants!!! I need to get sticks in the ground so they can climb. I’m hoping there will be enough beans to get us through winter for soups and Saturday night baked beans around the wood stove.

The corn patch…. It’s not looking so hot. Only about 20% of the corn I planted is growing well and I know it’s all my fault.

  1. The corn patch was never watered {unless it rained, which has been only 3 times since the seeds were planted}.
  2. The patch is in the shade {something we won’t be able to fix until this fall when the leaves behind the garden drop and we can get out there and clear the back 40}.
  3. There’s no mulch? I don’t know if corn really needs mulch though… When you drive by fields of corn it looks pretty bare on the ground. But what do I know?

Oh well, there’s always next year and hey, I guess I’ll learn about pollinating corn by hand this year, right?

Another thing I’m learning…. Azaleas, holly, and other prickly bushes, are not really my deal. Sunflowers? YES. Cutting flowers I would want to bring in my house…. Yes, I’ll keep those…

But lilies, and mass iris plantings…. Um no.

If I never see another red, orange or yellow daylily in my life, I’d be fine with that. I’m more of a pink, purple and blue girl when it comes to flowers.

I’m not sure when my love affair for growing vegetables really started, but I know without a doubt now, I am a person who favors vegetables over flowers.

Now is the time to get that extra planting of root vegetables in the garden. Thanksgiving people…. It’s just around the corner and wouldn’t it be wonderful if your side dishes contained homegrown vegetables? Yes, yes it would. So hop to it {Says the girl who has yet to get her own fall seeds in the ground!}.

I wish Mrs. HB were here. She would know what to do with all the peppers.

Maybe I’ll ship her a big box of them when they’re ready to harvest. I miss our walks, The Net Shed, and arguing over really dumb stuff.

Ahhh summer. We are in the thick of it. When the days are long, and hot and tiring. When the bugs are out in full force, the air is muggy and there is SO MUCH TO BE DONE. It’s times like this, I wish I could clone myself just so I could keep up with all the needs to be done.

Meal Planning and Grocery Shopping Trips – Week 28 of 52

Pickety bits. My husband had a issue with the jalapeno spread and a cheddar cheese spread in the olive tray. Which is sort of funny seeing how he has never put a tray of pickety bits together. Maybe I’ll have him assemble the next one and see just how artfully he arranges the food.

Mississippi Pot Roast. My husband LOVES this meal.

The leftovers from a Mississippi pot roast make the best Shepard’s Pie. {Basically add a little flour to the leftover pot roast liquid to make a gravy, add leftover pot roast meat, frozen peas, corn and carrots and top it with mashed potatoes.

Taco Tuesday

The best chocolate cookies {a care package for} for Monkey Boy.

Date day. This week it involved lunch at a country store and an old estate.

Food wise, there were some delicious meals, but honesty, nothing new or crazy exciting. While I was at the fabric store though I did notice they were asking $1.50 {!!!!} for a packet of M & M’s. Can you believe it? I remember when candy was a QUARTER! I feel like I’m getting old. Also, the gauntlet you have to walk to get to the registers these days at some stores, is insane.

When people leave dishes in the sink when the dishwasher is 25 inches away. It makes me sorta crazy.

And leaving empty containers on DISPLAY. What is up with that? It makes you wonder…. Do they think they’re doing you a favor by saying “We are out of XYZ…. and here is empty box to prove it.”  Or do you think it’s more like, hey, would you mind taking this to the recycle bins in the garage for me….. Because you know, it’s just so far away.  Or maybe, just maybe they think you enjoy picking up after other people. You know, like it’s your job or something. 😉

Ahhhh Monday. Let’s do this!!
