One Hundred Dollars a Month

I am your typical housewife living in high maintenance suburbia. I have a handsome husband, 2 kids and a flock of pet chickens. I try and feed my family with $100 a month. With the help of coupons, gardening and bartering I am able to squeeze the most out of our grocery budget and still manage to have a little fun along the way.

If I had to choose just one television program that I have adored, and I do mean ADORED with every fiber of my being for as long as I can remember, it’s The Waltons.

In my mind, The Waltons is the best television program ever made. An ordinary family, living in a small town, with simple down home values. It’s a clean and wholesome program and I just love it to bits. In fact any time I have spent the night at my parents {or my mother has at mine} she always yells out “Goodnight Mary Ellen” to me as I’m going to bed.

And because I’m such a nerd, I’ve even been to the Waltons Museum, Earl Hamner Jr’s childhood home and own a signed copy of Spencer’s Mountain. So you can imagine how delighted I was when I found out The Waltons seasons 1-9 is now available with Amazon Prime.

So… I guess you pretty much know what I’ll be watching every.single.evening. this June as I work on my hooked rugs and such.  THE WALTONS! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Did you grow up watching this show? Do you love it as much as I do? Who was your favorite character? I think mine is still Grandma.

bits and bobs: A random assortment of things; small remaining pieces and things

Meet Eleanor. At first I thought she might be a deer, or a meerkat but now I am convinced Eleanor is an emu and she means me no harm. I feel like Eleanor is there to wish me sweet dreams as I walk past her each night before I climb into bed. If you stare at her long enough you’ll notice her long neck. Do you see it? Isn’t she beautiful?

This is Randy the large rat who lives in my garage. I only noticed him yesterday as I was hauling the hose into the garage. What do you think he’s trying to tell me?

I filled up the tank yesterday and paid $2.71 a gallon for unleaded gas. How much did YOU pay for a gallon of gas the last time you filled up?

People are SERIOUS about using the passing lane here. They actually use the lane to pass people on the left and then go back to their original lane. Totally a foreign concept to this west coast girl, but I like it.

Any librarians out there? When did checking books out via the computer system become the norm in our public libraries? Was it in 1991 or was the book I just checked out shelved for a few years?

My new favorite thing… Drying my hand dyed wool on the fence in the hot sun. I’ve wanted to have a proper clothesline for years and I think I might just take the plunge this summer and have the HH put one together for me. If you line dry your clothes and have any tried and true tips, I’d love to hear them. Also, there is a TON of pollen floating around these days… Is that going to cling to my sheets? Is there anytime of year you don’t put your laundry out on the line? Curious minds want to know.

The Donut House – Hayden, Idaho

I was going through the {10 million} pictures on my phone yesterday when I came across the photos I took last year with Mrs. HB while we were on our working vacation. Remember that? She had a three day conference in the Spokane/Coeur D’alene area and I tagged along and before we knew it we were at that tea shop?

Anywho… We happened to be driving through the town of Haden, Idaho on National Donut Day {which is June 1st this year} and decided to stop at The Donut House because the parking lot was full and a huge line was forming outside the door.

Now I don’t know about you, but I LOVE donuts, especially on National Donut Day when they are passing out a free one.

The offerings were pretty basic: Donuts made from scratch and a handful of beverages. The donuts weren’t as soft as and billowy as Krispy Kreme, or the hearty, stick to your ribs kind like you’d find at Dunkin’ Donuts, or even the predictable fluffy no thrills ones you find at the grocery store.

These donuts were somewhere in the middle of all of those. And you know what? I can’t remember ever having tasted a better donut. The donuts {all 4 that we ate} reminded us of our childhoods. Simple sugary goodness. Down to the last bite.

So, if you ever find yourself anywhere near Hayden, Idaho be sure and stop by The Donut Shop for a bite. You won’t regret it.
