Need milk? The next time you need to pick up a gallon of milk consider stopping by your local Rite Aid, CVS, Walgreens or other local pharmacy to pick up a jug. They may have less of a selection to choose from but milk prices at the drugstores tend to run 20-25% less than the grocery store. It’s not much, but it can save your family on average $30-$40 a year.
Where do YOU buy your milk, and how much is a gallon of milk going for in your area?

I wish this was the case in our area but it’s just the opposite. I can get a gallon of milk at Aldi for $2.49 but all of the drug stores are at least $3.50-$4.50!

I live in Vermont and our cheapest place to buy milk is our Aldi’s. It’s a $1.49 a gallon. Good thing to as we go they a gallon a day! Maybe it would be cheaper to have a cow.
Jenny says
I buy it in the bag for 1.09 for a half gallon at the gas station. I get a punch card and when it is full I get a dollar off a gallon. Our grocery store runs about 3.49 a gallon. About every 6 weeks a grocery store about 20 minutes away runs a coupon for a gallon for 99 cents.
Dayna says
Sam’s Club 1.89 a gallo . We buy 3 a week. Teenage boys…
Liz says
Sam’s $2.29 for milk & $3.32 chocolate! We go through about 3 gal a week

I buy my milk at Aldis. It’s the cheapest…..usually. I almost commented on the name brand vs generic issue in regards to milk. I didn’t, but now I will. 😉 At my Aldi’s, the milk is the same as the name brand milk at CVS and Dollar General. The label is different, but the milk is the same. I always think it’s funny when people tell me they can’t drink off brand milk. I am married to a milk man, and he is hauling the same milk with diff labels.
Ashley says
Ours is generally around $2.29 for a gallon of 2%. Our drug stores are not cheaper. However, if milk/egg/butter prices are high at the grocery stores, the gas stations are the best bet to get a better price.
Jen Young says
It used to be that way here.
The little Walmart in our town closed so I priced Dollar General & all the gas stations to see how much milk was. It was all $5 a gallon. I shop at Aldi the next town over where I get it on average for $2.50.
Dena says
Winco, $1.99 gallon, usually. Or at Fred Meyers, when the coupon is $0.99 for 1/2 gallon, limit 6.
Cat says
Hahah I wish any of these were our prices… a gallon of milk in Saskatchewan (Canada) is $4.65 on average give or take a few cents.
Jen Y says
I wonder how much of that is tax? I think Canada has much higher taxes?
Stephanie says
From Ontario and I get mine at Shoppers Drug Mart for $4.29 for 4 litres/1 gallon but on 20x point promo day that is an ROI of 40%+.
Maria says
Those are some really good prices. I get mine at cvs. I buy the half gallons which are 2.39 each. The exact same milk is $2.89 at Walmart. I use a $4 extra buck earned the week before and get a gallon of milk for 81 cents. I buy half gallons because I put one in the freezer for later
Sue R. says
Grocery store (in Oregon) about $2.79. I do watch for the Fred Meyer/Kroger sale of 99 cents for a half gallon. Would be interesting to know location of everyone’s prices…
Anita says
I live in British Columbia and jug of milk usually runs around $4.65 (cheapest) and $5.50 for chocolate.
Auntie M says
I double up on savings at Fred Meyer when 1/2 gallon of store brand milk is .99 and the senior discount (first Tuesday of each month) is an additional 10% off. The milk goes into the freezer so the savings lasts until the next big sale.
Nancy D says
We do the 99 cent coupon that covers milk, choc milk or oj and freeze it too. I pour about a cup of it out of each gallon to allow for expansion during freezing…does anybody else do that? Is it necessary? We love it!
Jen says
Kroger in Ohio has gallons for $1.79 every few weeks and half gallons 10/$10. I never pay more than $2 for a gallon of milk! Maybe because we are in dairy country? Avocados are so expensive here and they were 3 for $1 when I visited my in laws in TX. So I think it has a lot to do with the cost of shipping to your store.
Daddio7 says
CVS and DG, $3.79 in north Florida. Just my wife and me so a gal last two weeks. I keep my frig at 32 F because I like my milk COLD. Half gals are never on sale and are usually $2.79. I always buy a gallon, does my Scottish heart good to get another half gal for $1.
Toni says
I live in Ontario – you buy milk in litres. The largest bag is 4.27, but if you get it at Shopper’s Drug Mart on senior’s day (Thursday) it’s only 3.42. You also get points for it.

I’m in Boise & Fred Meyer & Albertsons have $1.88 gallon all the time. Our Fred Meyer runs specials at least once a month at $ .79 half-gallon including chocolate & orange juice. But butter? $3.40 – $4.99 lb!
Amanda says
Walmart and Winco near me usually have whole milk for $1.80-$2 per gallon.
We usually buy 2 gallons of raw milk per week for $7 each, and occasionally buy a gallon of regular milk if it looks like we won’t make it a full week on the raw. The price difference is a little bit breathtaking if I think about it too hard, but we feel(and hope, haha!) the raw milk is worth it.
Amy says
I just purchased a gallon of 2% milk today at Walmart in Leduc, AB and it was $4.58 plus $0.35 deposits ($4.93 Cdn = $3.80 USD). We drink at least 3 gallons of milk a week so I think I’ll check out a drugstore. A friend of mine told me it was cheaper there a couple of years ago but I only liked to hit up one store when I headed into town (Superstore) as the children were really young and it was too much work to visit muliple stores. Now that two are in school I can take my time shopping now with the youngest 🙂

While you are in the drug store, check the other foods and their ads–tuna, gelatin, etc. are often marked down a lot.

Also, eggs! sometimes a dozen eggs is $.99 at Walgreen’s and CVS.
Jen Young says
I pretty much always buy my milk at Aldi because it’s always cheaper. I do watch for the milk sales at Walgreens but even then it’s not cheaper. I can’t remember what I paid week? I think it was around $2.30 a gallon at Aldi, always over $3 everywhere else.
Brianna says
I pay $3.79 at Kroger in Georgia. Occasionally it goes 2/$5. We go through 4 gallons a week. I am waiting and hoping for a sale on cream so I can make homemade ice cream. It is $8.99 for a 20oz bottle. I feel it is expensive. All cow products here are ridiculously expensive ($6.99/lb 73/27 ground beef) but chicken goes $0.59/lb whole:( I am originally from MT, so I cringe at the cow product prices here…..in MT I use to cringe at chicken prices.
Mamatosix says
I buy our milk @ Costco in Everett Washington. 2% runs $1 99 a gallon.
That’s the only place I can get it consistently at a good price. We use about 5-6 gallons a week. Eggs have dropped to $1.00 a dozen in the 5 dozen boxes , so Costco is the only place I buy milk and eggs. I like not having to chase down a sale and deal with store limits that don’t work for my size family.
Annie says
I only buy raw milk and it’s $4.30 a gallon. I don’t mind paying that since it’s raw, and we get quite a bit of cream on the top. Besides, we don’t really drink milk that often since the kids are all grown and gone, so it’s rare to have it. We may use a gallon a month.
Rachel says
That is definitely not the case here in Central Ohio. Our CVS and RiteAid milk is always over $3 a gallon, while Kroger is usually around $2.39 a gallon when not on sale. Last week they were on sale for $1.79 a gallon, and they have regular sales of 10 for $10 on the half gallons. Aldi is also usually cheaper– a couple weeks ago they were $1.89 a gallon. Walmart is our most expensive here with milk being $3.99 a gallon. We go through at least 4 gallons a week.

A gallon at Aldi near my work (25mi from home) is 1.19. the Aldi near my mother (80mi away) is 1.49. my local grocery chain has deals on sundays for 2.29 otherwise milk near me (drug and grocery stores) is anywhere from 2.29-3.99 depending on what store you go into.
i wish almond milk was as cheap….

In Minnesota…Costco
1% $1.89 and chocolate $2.35
With two college boys home for the summer and a 15 year old boy, we will go through about a gallon a day…give or take…
