Last night I went out to the garden to pick a cabbage and Lucy the puggle dog decided to help.
Do puggles like cabbage? Yes, yes they do.
Not only will puggles eat cabbages, but they’ll also eat blueberries, peanut butter, carrots, mice and dried up chipmunks. They also like to dig up the remains of pet chickens and chew on their bones on the back lawn too. To say puggle puppies are adventurous eaters, would be an understatement.
Lucy is doing a pretty good job of staying out of the garden beds though, I think the threat of getting squirted with the garden hose has been a great deterrent. With the exception of the raspberries dangling from their canes, she’s becoming quite the little garden companion.
Do you see those bush beans? Well HELLO! I can’t wait to pick those suckers!
And check out this squash plant. I can’t remember if I planted a pumpkin here or an acorn squash, but it’s thriving alongside the strawberries and min that’s for sure.
And the Swiss chard along the fence… The leaves are HUGE. I’d say it’s time to pick a basket of the stuff for the chickens.
The artichokes are starting to pop up all over the place too. I’m not sure if I want to pick them or just watch them bloom. It’s a hard choice because artichoke flowers are beautiful.
And last but not least, the Roma tomatoes. We’ve harvested a few Sun Gold tomatoes so far, but I’m really, really looking forward to harvesting these beauties and turning them into sauce.
Keep Calm and Garden On… that’s what I say.
Have a great Friday,
♥ Mavis & Lucy

Your garden is beautiful. I leave my chokes to bloom on the bush most years. I use the small chard leaves for a spinach substitute and juice the big ones. My niece house/critter sat for me this last week and was excited at the prospect of using all the free organic veggies in the garden. I returned to half a dozen plants pulled from the ground. She didn’t realize she could just pick off what she needed. I’m sure glad the tomatoes weren’t ripe yet.

I just adopted a lab mix puppy and she has demolished my poyted pepper plants. Banana and bell! Every leaf and pepper, gone! I have had dogs my whole life and have never had this problem. Needless to sayn all pepper plants are on a high table now.

I wonder if some hot peppers might break of that? Maybe not. Labs will eat anything, I swear.

I’ve never seen an artichoke flower! Do post a picture of that if you let it go; I would love to see it. Your pictures make me want to send some in of my own. So beautiful. I think there is nothing so beautiful as a vegetable garden.

Sob Sob….. it’s so unfair. Here in New Zealand it is mid winter and all I have in the garden now is a few parsnips, sub standard leeks, bug chewed Brussel Sprouts and some red and white carrots. I went out to pull some carrots yesterday and they were completely frozen in. I paid $2.99 for a baseball sized cauliflour and $3.49 for a 4″ cabbage. So I envy you your summer veges, and the fruit…….drool. Strawberries and blueberries – sigh, yes I remember the days, in fact I am going to replant my strawberries after this next polar weather blast due tomorrow and Monday.
But on the other side, I get bragging rights in Jan, Feb when you are all on the lean stuff. Funny world isn’t it. You are sweltering in the heat and we are freezing in the cold.

Oh Mari, you have no sympathy from me. Well maybe in the dead of winter but that’s about it living in paradise and all:-).

We adopted an eight-year-old puggle recently, and that little guy loves veggies! He patrols the drop zone while I am cooking and loves it when romaine ribs, tomatoes, even raw cauliflower hits the floor. The only vegetable that he has refused so far is spinach. Not enough juice or crunch, I guess.
