{Black Bean and Cheese Quesadillas recipe}
Have you ever made homemade tortillas before? If you haven’t you should give them a try. But let me warn you, as soon as you do, you may never want to buy packaged tortillas again.
I first learned how to make homemade tortillas from my friend MamaJJ, and have been making them ever since.
Here is her simple {and delicious} recipe:
How to Make Homemade Tortillas
Ingredients
- 2 cups All purpose flour
- 1 tea Salt
- 1 1/2 tea Baking powder
- 2 tea Vegetable oil
- 3/4 cup Warm milk
Instructions
-
Mix dry with wet and knead for a few minutes. Cover dough with a dish towel and allow to rest for 20 minutes. Cut dough into 8 pieces, roll out into circles and fry in a cast iron skillet for 45 seconds on each side {I sprayed my pan with Pam first}. Fill with beans and rice.

Homemade tortillas!!! Wow…and here I always thought that they would be so time consuming and complicated, but will have to give them a try. Can you freeze them? Or do you use them fresh? Can you make up a batch a day early? Inquiring minds want to know ๐

Does anyone know if rice milk can be substituted for cows milk? I never have that on hand. Could I sub half the white flout for whole wheat?
Trish says
I was taught years ago by a friend from Mexico, and she used warm water and shortening. They were great! I would think pretty much any liquid would do. I no longer use shortening, tho.
As for substituting 1/2 whole wheat flour, you have to remember it’s heavier/denser. I’d try 1/3 whole wheat to 2/3 white flour first, and then play with the recipe.

Wow, my tortillas really puffed up and looked nothing like these photos. I wonder why they needed baking powder. I used a tortilla press instead of rolling them out, but shouldn’t I still have gotten a good result?

What is tea salt? Can you use regular salt? Sea salt ?

3/4 cup milk? I have everything else measured and I’m stumped!
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes. 3/4 cup milk.
Stephanie Burke says
Does it have to be cast iron skillet

Mavis, the link to the recipe for refrained beans does not work.

Thank you I just fixed it. ๐

Hi Mavis!
I just made your recipe last night & it got great reviews. โ I used olive oil which worked well. I was also short on time/lazy, so instead of rolling out the tortillas w/ a rolling pin & trimming them to a circle shape, I floured a dinner plate & dusted the ball of dough w/ flour. Then I smooshed it between the two plates. Perfect circle & saved time…!
