Fuji Apples $.60 a pound!
I don’t know about you, but I LOVE stopping by produce stands this time of year. Ever since I was a kid my grandparents would stop by the Tacoma Boy’s produce stand every weekend before heading out of town. Back then you were not allowed to touch the fruit. They would have a collage aged kid standing next to every display offering you a slice/taste of whatever it was they were selling.
Over the years Tacoma Boys has expanded their store to include a huge meat department, cheese cases and bulk candy sections. Plus, they let you bag your own produce now. Which, sadly is actually one of the reasons I think it was so magical when I was a kid. It wasn’t the fruit, but the fact you couldn’t touch the fruit.
So if you are a local, and you are in love with fuji apples as much as I am, now is the time to stock up! $.60 cents a pound is the best price you’ll see on fall Fuji apples anywhere around here.
Here are a few more items I thought were a great deal.
Red Peppers 2 for $1.00
Acorn Squash $.50 each
Fresh Pears $.69 lb
10 pound bags of russet potatoes for $2 each
But the cream cheese? Hmmm, I think I’ll wait for it to go on sale.
What do you think?
Are these prices higher or lower than where you live?

I wish I could buy acorn squash for $0.50 a piece! They’re at least $0.80 lb here 🙁
The lowest we get apples around here would be about $1 lb at the grocery store or at farm stands for organic apples for about the same price. $0.60 is a great price for apples!

I just bought a spaghetti squash this weekend, it was $1.39 a pound. Love Honey Crisp apples, they were $2.49 a pound and are still at the store. LOL!

Great produce pricing.. insane on cream cheese.. but those specialty stores do that.. you get great deals on the items they are known for.. then they throw in a few that area trying to trigger you.. “Oh YEAH I need cream cheese and butter.. I will just grab them here and not stop anywhere else” at 2.5 times the average price…

I live in Michigan where the apple crop was obliterated this year by unseasonably high temps in March. Try 1.18 or more for a pound at my grocery and they aren’t even the delicious Michigan kind. 🙁

Is that cream cheese price in honor of Halloween because it is downright scarey?

We have a place called Chuck’s Produce here in SW WA (it is in Vancouver) that has really good prices on at least 20 different items weekly.
I was there this morning.
I got:
Honey Crisp Apples – .77 lb.
Braeburn Apples – .77 lb.
D’Anjou Red Pears – .40 lb.
Cauliflower- .77 lb.
Whole Mushrooms – .99 for 8 oz.
10 lb. Russet Potatoes – $1

$.40 for pears in a rockin’ deal!

Added bonus is to go at lunchtime. Their soups and sandwiches are delicious!

Well in Texas, you’re looking to pay $2.49/lb for organic apples. We don’t have locally grown apples down here : (. Red peppers are usually anywhere from $1-$2 a piece. All of those produce prices up there are a super bargain! However, one thing we always get good deals on is watermelon. Those grow everywhere down here so they are usually $3-$4 for one.

Wow wow!! Those prices are AMAZING! I’m in Albany NY and feel like I get a deal if I buy 5lbs of potatoes for under $3.50. Apples were soooo expensive this year in my area after the terrible weather we had and so many trees died. You are a lucky ducky with those prices!!
Mavis says
Holy cow that is a crazy price for potatoes! Yikes!

They had honeycrisp for a dollar. I think they are the most amazing kind! 🙂

I spoke with a apple farmer in Ohio he said that he and his fellow Ohio farmers only got 20% of their crop. I paid 15.00 for 1/2 bushell. Apple cider is 5.50. Good news though our cream cheese is 1.19.

I am in Cincinnati, Ohio and everything you shown was just about the same price or a little cheaper except for the potatoes…..they are around $1 to $1.50 here right now.

Here in St Louis I was getting APPLES for .99/lb (until I scored $10/bushel on Craigslist from a local guy with delicious apples in his yard – $.20/lb so I bought 100 lbs!) Our local Shop N Save had 10 lb bags of Russet POTATOES for .88! (I bought a LOT and have been pressure canning them.) Great prices on pears and peppers where you are!

I heart Tacoma Boys. I wish it was closer to where I live.

Ok, I live in Oregon and am finding great prices on the apples, pears and potatoes, but I am wondering how people are storing these and if so, are you storing them throughout the winter? I new to doing this kind of stuff and need some sisterly advice. Oh, by the way, Mavis I love your website!!!! Thank you!
Debra says
Melinda – I have become a canning fiend! Apples have been made into applesauce, apple butter, spiced apple rings, apple chutney, apple jelly, apple slices in light syrup (for pie), and spiced apples. I also got a pressure canner this year and have canned potatoes as well as apples and butternut squash with chicken broth for soup.

Those are some awesome prices (except the cream cheese, yikes!). Apples rarely go below $1.99/lb here. I live right outside of Washington D.C, so maybe they just think we will pay for it. The cheapest I have seen a red pepper was for a $1 for one. That didn’t last long though. Usually they are over 1.99/lb. The farmers markets/fruit stands here are still pretty pricey because I guess it is the area. Potatoes, well I don’t want to tell you how much a bag is, scary! I’d be stocking up with those prices. 🙂
Mavis says
I’ve heard D.C. is super expensive. 🙁 Do you have room for a mini garden?
Elizabeth S. says
I live in a condo so I don’t know how I’d make a mini garden on the balcony. I am open for ideas though!
