As soon as we touched down at Boston’s Logan Airport we took a shuttle over to the rental car place, hopped in the car and drove straight to Kittery, Maine to Lil’s Cafe. The Girl and I had been there twice before and I thought it would make the perfect first stop after the 5 hour red eye flight from Seattle to Boston.
The shop was bustling with locals, a few tourists and some workers on break from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The line was about 5 people deep the entire time we were there but it moved quickly as everyone selected their pastries and announced their coffee orders.
The HH tried their Ham and Gruyere Croissant with a cup of coffee and said it did not disappoint.
I ordered a cruller. It’s what I’ve had all three times that I’ve eaten there.
Lil’s makes the best crullers on the planet. This time of year they are serving up their apple ginger crullers, which are amazing. Let me tell you Bob, they are worth the drive. Seriously. I have never had a better donut in my entire life. Although it was tempting to buy a few more for the road, I didn’t. I wanted to savor my one insanely delicious apple ginger cruller while I was in the shop with my cup of hot tea and just enjoy the moment.
I’ll be back, I know I will.
And when I go back… I’ll order another cruller. 😉
Simple, delicious food. You just can’t beat it.

Kittery! Long ago in a former life, I was in the Navy. I went through some training at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, which is actually in Kittery Maine. Good times.

Thank you for teaching me something new, even about my own bailiwick! I lived in Kittery from 1990 to 1995, before the time of Lil’s. But those goodies look so good, that I think I need a little trek over the bridge to check it out. Wallingford Square is the best of Kittery (the little library, the great water views, and now Lil’s). I hope you avoided the worst of Kittery—the Route 1 outlet malls.

Nope, I’ve never been to the outlet malls there. 😉

Maine is the best! I lived in Rockport Maine for 17 years and keep trying to find a way back. If you’re thinking of a house in the Northeast, you can’t go wrong with Maine. It’s beautiful and Mainers are great people. If you ever make it up to Rockport try Three Dog Cafe!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Rockport, Maine! I adore that section of coastline below Camden, it’s gorgeous, and the drive is so peaceful. I’ll put Three Dog Cafe on my list. 🙂

Another great thing about Maine is that the property taxes are lower in Maine than in New Hampshire. Of course, Maine has sales tax and NH does not, which is why so many people live in Maine, but do their shopping in New Hampshire!

Dang, that cruller looks good! It would have been hard to pass up that everything bialy, too!
