While on our way to Lopez Island to visit Demetria Provatis for our homemade pies, The Girl and I stopped at The Store in Anacortes for breakfast. Word on the street {okay, their website} was that they had the best muffins in the world, and so we wanted to find out if in fact that was true.
For a place that’s open 365 days a year and bakes over 215 different varieties of muffins, I was a little surprised when we first walked into the store. The Store in Anacortes was part country store where you could pick up a gallon of milk or a needful item or two on your way home from work, part wine store and then of course there was all those muffins.
I thought the combination was fascinating. Who knew wine and muffins could sell so well together? My mother, both a wine and a muffin connoisseur would have LOVED this place. {Mom, if you are reading this, we totally need to take a road trip and stock up!}
The Girl ordered a shot in the dark, I ordered a hot tea and then we contemplated which muffins to fill our bellies with.
We arrived shortly after the store opened and the place smelled heavenly! In fact, the muffins were still warm, I couldn’t believe it.
I ordered the good start bran muffin and The Girl had the raspberries and cream. $10 for 2 drinks and 2 muffins… and you know what? It was TOTALLY WORTH IT!
My big bran muffin {filled with carrots, apples, walnuts and raisins} was spot on and had just the right amount of texture and crunch to it. The crumb topping, it was pretty amazing too. If we lived closer I think I’d try and get a job at The Store in Anacortes just so I could try each of the 215 muffins they make.
This is the owner Frank. And he’s been whipping out muffins since 1990. Clearly, he’s got a good thing going. So if you are ever in the Anacortes area, stop by and grab a few. You’ll be glad you did.

Just curious here on the east coast. How many varieties does he make each day?
Mavis Butterfield says
That is a good question and I didn’t ask. He did say he sells about 300 muffins a day though.

I grew up going to The Store every week with my 100 pennies, and buying 100 pieces of penny candy! There used to be coins embedded in the knots of the floorboards, I would sit and try to pry them up with my little fingers so I could buy more candy! Anyway, he probably has about 20 kinds per day, some are staples, some are seasonal, some are just part of the rotation. All are Amazing!

Usually 20-25 different muffins a day … some are always there, some are seasonal. The rhubarb is my favorite!

Cathy from Anacortes here. They have about 20-30 flavors each day. There is also a small cafe with soup, sandwiches (made on their fresh-baked bread) and other goodies, made fresh every day. It’s an adventure, all packed into a small, very old building.

Best pies are at Barbs Pies in Ferndale, Wa. She has other yummy bakery treats, too. The pies are my favorite.

It varies day to day, season to season I believe but let me tell you the Triple Chocolate Silk and Cookies and Cream are the best dang muffins you’ve ever had! And the Bran.. and the Almond Poppyseed.. heck all of them are amazing. The cookies are pretty phenomenal too

As a local, I’d say they offer at least 18 different kinds a day. You can also order a specific kind to be made on a certain day, but you have to buy at least three of them. We have found that nay of the fruit varieties are the more moist ones.

The cinnamon rolls are pretty amazing, too! So are their lunches. Wish I lived there, but we make it a point to stop in when we are in town.

Best muffins ever! So happy we live in Burlington. Hop, skip and a jump.

The Store is right down the street from our house. You didn’t even get started on the cookies or lemon bars. OMG. It’s really hard to just drive by on the way home. They also have a wonderful wine selection and make great sandwiches. You gotta go!

Wow! This sounds awesome. I love that you showcase places that are local for me to add to my “check it out” list. Can’t wait to go here!

I’m going to add a bakery to your list, if you’re in the mood for a road trip. Polebridge Mercantile on the west side of Glacier National Park. Way of the beaten path, like 25 miles past the last power line. But, unreal bakery treats, and spectacular scenary.

Thank you for your timely review! I have a lunch date with gal pals planned for this Sunday up in La Conner, however, since I don’t get up to that area very often I plan on making a muffin run to The Store as well. They look so good!!! btw..the descriptions of their muffins on their website are a pretty entertaining read as well. 😀

Ok Mavis, I DID make it to The Store today but we made the mistake of going there during the annual Oyster Run biker rally. OMG. Bikers EVERYWHERE. lol. BUT… the muffins were totally worth the 20 minutes of traffic getting out of there. We split a Triple Chocolate Silk -YUM -and I now have Butterfinger (tried part of that one too -hello!! ), chocolate frenzy, strawberry rhubarb, and caramel apple muffin goodness in my freezer (they freeze well apparently). The lady I let cut in front of me while I was deciding bought ALL the coconut cream pie muffins (her favorite) so I totally missed out on that one. lol!
