Being frugal doesn’t mean that you have to hole yourself up in a bunker somewhere and cut the outside world off, using only sticks and mud to meet your basic needs. It really is about getting your money to stretch as far as possible. I mean, when it really comes down to it, your money is a representation of your time–time you might have rather spent with your kids, or traveling, or {insert favorite past time here}, so just giving it away is like not respecting your own time.
Shopping smart is one way to get the almighty dollar to stretch far enough to help you live within your means…hopefully with a little extra jingle in your pocket. Timing your purchases around yearly sales is one of the ways I try to shop smart. Sometimes, that means going without until the price is the best, other times, it means stocking up early, so when I do need it, I paid a reasonable price. Either way, shelling out extra cash in an impulsive moment for something you can get at a fraction of the cost is just crazy talk.
Knowing what’s on sale, what’s in season, and what you should be able to find on clearance each month really helps you plan. How do you know? That’s why you have me…
Promotions and Holidays in September
There will be straggling Back-to-School promotions through Labor Day in September, and of course, on that note, there will be Labor Day sales. Back to school will host things like breakfast bars, granola bars, fruit snacks, etc. Any lunchbox related item, you’ll probably see it on sale. Labor Day sales might bring on some markdowns on those back-to-school fashions and BBQ foods, like chips, hamburger/hotdog buns, etc. September is also National Coupon Month, so keep your eye out for larger dollar coupons.
Seasonal Fruit and Vegetable You Will Typically Find on Sale in September
Look for deals on acorn squash, apples, beets, butternut squash, cantaloupe, cauliflower, eggplant, figs, grapes, green beans, lettuce, mangoes, mushrooms, peppers, pumpkins {this will be the start of the pumpkin season}, sweet potatoes, swiss chard, tomatoes, and pears.
Annual Sales and Deals You Can Expect in September
This biggest sales will be Labor Day. Most businesses will be competing for your attention and offer financing, along with markdowns–furniture stores and car lots especially.
Clearance Items to Be On the Lookout For in September
Toward the middle to the end of the month, you can grab up school/office supplies on the cheap. Look for items that grace your kids’ lists every year, like lined paper and composition notebooks. You can stock up now and have them at the ready for next year.
Now go forth and save.

Home Depot has a paint sale every Labor Day. We decided to change the color of the trim on our house this year but waited until the Labor Day weekend sale to purchase. Plus, the weather will be cooler when we are ready to paint!
