One Hundred Dollars a Month

I am your typical housewife living in high maintenance suburbia. I have a handsome husband, 2 kids and a flock of pet chickens. I try and feed my family with $100 a month. With the help of coupons, gardening and bartering I am able to squeeze the most out of our grocery budget and still manage to have a little fun along the way.

I headed out to the garden early this morning and one thing lead to another and around noon I realized that I was still in my pj’s, picking beans.

I ended up with 10lbs beans, 2lbs tomatoes, and a zucchini and a cucumber, oh and 3 eggs too.

This afternoon I was able to preserve 10 1/2 pints of plum jam and 10 pints of beans. I ended up giving away 5lbs of beans to the neighbors. I had other pressing matters to attend to like a water slide party.

The pickling cucumbers need to be picked so next on the list for tomorrow is more dill pickles and this. I hope it works out and if it does, I will be looking forward to cucumber salad this winter.

That handsome husband of mine brought me home a bouquet of fresh dill last night. Just in time too. Today I whipped up 6 pints of dilly beans and 4 quarts of dill pickles. In one of the quarts I added 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes. I hope they turn out spicy.how to grow tomatoes

I planted 4 kinds of baking squash this year: butternut, acorn, long island cheese (pumpkin) and Hubbard squash. In my reckless planting earlier this summer, I forgot to label what I planted and where, but I think this is Hubbard. There are about 5 squash growing on this vine. Is that too many? Should I be pinching some of them off?

This morning I picked about 5lbs of beans from the garden.

And then I proceeded to can them.

Just look at those cute little jars all snuggled next to each other waiting to be boiled.

Today’s count: 13 pints of green beans for a total of 24 pints. I still need 28 more pints of beans if I’m going to reach my goal of 52 pints (one pint a week for a year).

I’m still in awe that there are really people out there who can/grow/eat all their own food.
