A big THANK YOU to everyone who has sent in their photographs and stories. I hope by sharing other people’s pictures and stories here on One Hundred Dollars a Month we can all have an awesome year. Keep them coming!
Hi Mavis!
My husband and I made some items with pallets, based off two of your projects you have featured on your blog.
In order to find the pallets, I looked on Craigslist. I didn’t want to pay anything for the pallets, so I had to look a few times. Finally, I found an ad by a business that just sets them outside and they are free for anyone to come and pick up. My husband went by a total of three times in order to get the amount that we needed.
First up, my husband made a compost bin. I showed him your compost bin, and he used that as inspiration. It was killing me to be throwing away compost, so I’m super happy to have this in our yard! Our property is on a .4 acre lot, and this is down the hill a bit from our house.
My husband wanted something that was sturdy and would keep things like leaves and grass clippings in, so he reused some of the boards from other pallets to fill in the gaps on the pallets he used. We had the garden stakes that he used to keep this in place, so all that he had to buy was the screws to hold it together.
While my husband was getting larger pallets for the compost bin, I asked him to get some smaller ones so I could make a sign based on your tutorial.
I am happy with my finished sign! I probably spent more on materials for that than he did on the compost bin! I bought a stencil set, paint marker, paint, screws, and a picture hanging kit. Having the stencils made the lettering go by faster than cutting and tracing around printed letters. I used the paint marker to go around the letters. I could have used just paint, but my boards were really rough and the paint was wicking out beyond where I painted it, so the marker helped with that aspect.
I hung the finished sign on a wall in our breakfast nook. I had been toying with the idea of buying a sign from an Etsy shop, but even though I had the money (a generous Christmas gift), in the end I just couldn’t click “buy” on a $130 purchase!
Thanks for the ideas and tutorials!
~Tammy

I’ve had good luck getting free pallets from the flooring stores in our area. The owners were happy to give the pallets away for free and they had a nice variety of sizes.
