On the way back home from our trip to Portland, we drove through Astoria, Oregon to check out the house from the movie Goonies. I used to quote Goonies all of the time as a kid {and I admit, quite a bit as an adult}, so when I found out it was released in 1985–almost 30 years ago, I felt old. Really old.
You can’t go in the house, it’s a private residence, but you can walk up the driveway and see it. Make sure to look left, because next door is Data’s house {Remember? He used to zip-line over to Mikey’s}. It looks pretty much exactly like it did in the movie…all those years ago. Ah, nostalgia has a funny way of making you feel dated.
Astoria is a really neat town, so if you really want to make a day of it, check out all the different filming locations {including the Lighthouse Cafe}.
If you ever do stop to see it, like any true fan would, I dare you to shuffle truffle up the driveway. 😉
If you could visit the site of any movie location, what would it be?
Personally, I’d love to see the house from The Notebook, Baby Boom, or Father of the Bride.

Well, just up the street from me a sci fi movie was filmed this past fall, at a closed nursing home, staring Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund. Full length feature of his web series, Fear Clinic. Was fantastic. And up in Cleveland, The Avengers, Captain America and some of Spider Man were filmed. My sister could have looked out her office window and qatched The Avengers being filmed. So I really don’t have to go far lol.

I just recently read that a Goonies sequel is in the works, and they are trying to get all of the original actors on board!

If you want to visit an amazing local film location you should visit Thornwood Castle in Lakewood. My DH did much of the concrete patios and walkways there and I was able to explore the awesome sunken garden while he was working.

I loved the Goonies! My boys have discovered it and love it too.
Where we vacation in NC, it is right down the road from the beach house in the movie Nights In Rodanthe. You can actually rent the house and stay in it for a week. The house was moved from a location on the beach where the surf was beginning to destroy it back further so that it is more protected. That was after the filming of the movie. I know way too much about the whole thing! LOL If you haven’t seen the movie, it’s a great romantic escape starring Richard Gere. Swoon. Also a good book, by Nicholas Sparks.

I have not seen the movie or read the book. I’ll have to add it to my list, thanks Kathy!

My sister’s mother-in-law is very fond of telling anyone and everyone repeatedly that she gave birth to my sister’s husband in that house. It’s sort of ruined the movie for me.

Funny..those are the exact same houses I would love to see!!! I would add the house from Funny Farm as well. If you ever travel in the south make sure you take plantation home tours. In Charleston, SC make sure you visit the Magnolia Plantation!

Did you also go here: http://www.oregonfilmmuseum.org/…it’s where they filmed the jail scene at the beginning of the Goonies movie. It’s small, but fun stuff to see and take pictures. We also walked up inside the Astoria Column..http://www.astoriaoregon.com/astoria_the_column.php. These is the best place for lunch, but you have to eat outside or in your car because the restaurant is in an old boat. They only serve one thing… http://www.bowpicker.com/
I don’t know how we missed going to see that Goonie house, but I’m putting it on my to-do list because we only live about 2 hours away and go to the coast several times a year.

The Goonies is my absolute most favorite movie of all time!! Would love to visit that area. I agree with Jamie G. You must come visit the lowcountry of South Carolina!

It’s Captain Chunk!!! I too quote goonie dialogue! I love it and own two copies. Don’t like realizing how long ago it came out. I now want to visit Astoria. Ditto on the Baby Boom house! Mavis I am thinking we could be fast friends over our love of the goonies and viewing some of your other movie favorites…too bad I live in Texas.
