It’s been seven weeks since we brought home our trio of blue cochin chicks and we are having so much fun with Blueberry, Bluebell and Blue Cheese.
These are by far the most gorgeous chickens we’ve ever owned {well, besides Pablo — he was a true show bird if there ever was one}.
The thing is, Lucy thinks these 3 chicks are her babies. Recently we’ve been keeping the chicks outside during the day {they live in the garage at night} to acclimate them to the outdoor temps before we move the chicks out to the big coop 24/7.
Once we get the chicks set up outside, Lucy lays down next to them for about an hour. I can’t tell if she’s just sunning herself or if she’s there for the company but the chicks come up to the fence and peck at her paws and she lets them. She’s even give them a kiss or two. How odd is that?
The big chickens want nothing to do with Lucy the puggle dog, but these babies are another story entirely. It’s a good thing the chickens are outdoor animals otherwise I’d have to buy them all chicken diapers so they could stay indoors and pal around with Lucy all day.
Do any of YOUR pets have unusual friendships with other animals?

Well, didn’t the new chicks come after Lucy? Maybe she thinks she’s a big sister (of sorts)!

We have a puggle and she gets along with out hens and new baby chicks. Sometimes she tries rolling her tennis ball to them and when they don’t roll it back she gets upset and barks at them. Must be a puggle thing 🙂

Oh that is just too cute! I giggled when you said she kissed them. Adorable!

My Amazon parrot was in love with a German shepherd I had from 91-03. He would follow her around, snuggle with her and preen her fur. For 10 years Joshua and I were best buds and when I got dogs, I was his 2nd choice… or 3rd.. or 4th..

My mother’s dog is a nanny of sorts to any baby animals we have around here. It’s so cute. We have pictures of baby turkeys and baby chickens snuggled into her chest taking a nap with her. Baby pigs playing with her feet and laying down, taking a nap, nose to nose. It’s the oddest and cutest thing I’ve been witness to.
As soon as any new baby enters the house, she has to be the very first one to see them. Then when they’re in their pens, she lays outside the pen and guards them.

Years ago our German Shepherd was best buds with my mini lop-eared bunny. It was so cute. They would take turns playing chase with each other. Scared my poor mom half to death the first time she saw Mariah (the g. Shepherd) chasing tiny Thumper…until she saw them abruptly switch, small bunny chasing big dog. Always cracked me up.

My one cat and guinea pig get along really well! The cat will get in the guinea pigs pen and just hang out in there with her! It’s adorable. 🙂

Wow these birds don’t even look like chickens in the first few pictures. They are beautiful!

We have a bulldog and he shares the girls fresh fruit in the morning. On the weekend I had one girl egg bound and I filled up a bowl with warm water and she just sat in it and Bosley the bulldog ( just over a year old) just laid beside her as if he senses she was not well. He would not leave her side until I took her out and dried her and put her back in the coop.
I think they can be friends as long as the are raised to not chase or be rough with the chickens. It is to cute.

What happened with your egg bound hen? Did she pass her egg? I have been wondering if the warm water soak works.

Mavis, which blog site do you use to write your blogs? Blogger? WordPress? Something else?
Mavis says
WordPress.

I think my previous question got lost in the blog switch =)
I was wondering if Lucy barks (like a pug) or bays (like a beagle). She is just the cutest puppy ever!
Did you have to special order those beautiful chickens?
lori c says
Maybe she thinks the chicks are her ‘pack’?

We have a yellow headed amazon parrot and a yorkshire terrier. The bird makes a throaty noise when he hears the school bus coming and the dog jumps up on the back of chair by the window next to the front door to watch for our son to come home!

My boxer, Pepper, LOVES her chickens. When there were only days old she would lie beside their brooder and only leave to eat and “potty” outside. This weekend they had their first free-range experience, and she stayed right with them…even corralling them when they tried to stray away from the yard. She loves to go into their run, drink their water and sample their chicken feed, so we call her “Chicken Dog.” They are learning to trust her more each day – that is until she pokes her nose into them and tries to give them a super wet Boxer bath.
