I love homemade tortillas. I can’t even look at the store bought ones anymore. I wanted to experiment with making them just a little bit healthier but just as awesome tasting. Mission accomplished. These whole wheat tortillas are so freakin good. And good for you too!
Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
4 cups whole wheat bread flour
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups boiling water
Directions
In a large mixing bowl, combine first 3 ingredients. Add shortening and blend with the back of a spatula or by hand until the mixture is crumbly. Form a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the boiling water. Blend with a fork until combined. Knead dough until smooth and no longer sticky {add more flour if needed}. Roll dough into small balls about the size of golf balls. Place them on a baking sheet, cover and let sit for at least an hour before cooking.
Heat a frying pan or cast iron skillet over high heat. Lightly flour a surface and roll out each dough ball depending on how thick you want your tortillas {If you have major OCD like me you might want to make cut them into semi perfect circles with a pastry wheel}. Cook for 45 seconds on each side {I sprayed my pan with Pam first}, turning if bubbles appear.

I recently made whole wheat kale flour tortillas since I still have so much outside. They were meant for tacos but everyone kept eating them up with a little butter that we had none for dinner. Delicious delight delovely blog has the recipe. Super yummy!

What kind of shortening? Like solid Crisco? Or something else?

Ooh, I love that idea! I have a tortilla press and it is Not up to the job: I get 1/4″ thick pancakes no matter how hard I press. (Maybe it serves me right for starting with a cheap one.)

I don’t like using shortening at all, will there be a problem with using lard instead of the shortening?

I thought shortening and lard were the same thing. Are they different?

Lard is from the fat of an animal (mostly pig) where shortening comes from oils of plants.

I use lard only now (from healthy animals!). They are THE BEST tortillas ever! We refuse to eat any other tortillas now! xo

I just read that only corn tortillas use a press. The flour tortillas use a rolling pin.
