Houseguests. They are a lot of work, but the tradeoff {entertainment/novelty factor} is nice. Even if they steal your bedroom.
Yesterday’s requests. Chicken soup from Panera and applesauce. Even if he’s only able to swallow a bite or two… it’s totally worth it.
Goodbye beautiful red tomatoes….
Hello green tomato salsa? Or maybe quiche? Do you have a favorite green tomato recipe you’d like to share?
I’m pretty sure I could stuff a pillow with all hair we vacuumed up.
I sent Monkey Boy to the store for 12 eggs. He asked if they were sold individually.ย And he was totally serious. How, in all of his 19 years, has he not noticed how eggs were sold is beyond me.
Pumpkin spice cake bars. You can’t have just one. ๐ The recipe is coming up next.
Have an AWESOME wednesday everyone,
~Mavis

Omg monkey boy! That totally blew my mind! Maybe he’s just used to having chickens and since they only lay one at a time he thought that’s how they were sold…..
We are having your green tomato curry sauce tonight!

I’m a bit of a newcomer to your blog. I’ve been trying to catch up! So far, I love it! I’ve already made several of your recipes & they’ve all been great. I read about your brother & I’m so very sorry. Prayers to you & your family. My mother had stage 4 ovarian cancer & I know it’s hard on everyone involved. I don’t think a lot of people understand how hard it is on the caretakers. I had to smile about the soup & applesauce. My mother always wanted tortilla soup from this nearby Mexican restaurant & a certain bread from a bakery near our cottage in Indiana. It’s 2 hours away from us in Illinois but we would go any distance if she was wanting it! She didn’t eat much but it’s funny how these 2 things were all she wanted.
Thank you for taking the time to share all these wonderful recipes, tips, photos, etc. with us. Oh, I also got the Eating Well magazine through you & I’m enjoying it. I had never even heard of it before. Thanks again! :0)

I should stop reading your blog at work….someone near me asked if i was okay when i started laughing about Monkey Boy and the Eggs!
How about Green Tomato Jam? I know it sounds gross but i tasted and bought a jar at a farmers market last year…it did NOT last long at my house.
Amy says
Nancy, Thank you for suggesting green tomato jam! I didn’t make any jam this year (not a lot of berries grew for me for some reason) and I am trying to be patient for the 2 tables of green tomatoes in the basement to ripen but if I can make jam… even better!

Mavis,
You and your family have been in my prayers as my family was in your shoes three years ago with my mom. She bravely fought stage 4 colon cancer and now I make sure everyone I know gets a colonoscopy! Enjoy your visitors although I’m sure you wish the circumstances were different.

We love this green tomato chutney from Food in Jars.

Haha. Monkey Boy’s comment about the eggs was pretty funny.
I’m excited for the recipe for the pumpkin spice bars.
Thinking of you and your family. Cancer sucks!

My brother (my only sibling) was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer at age 25 when I was 28. It was heartbreaking and devastating and after 12 years the tears still come easily for our family as well as yours. I’m so very very sorry, Mavis.

As for the tomatoes, try fried green tomatoes, or one of these recipes:

The mincemeat tastes like mincemeat!
PS. We just adopted another dog. We pick her up Friday. She will be five weeks old.

I suggest green tomato pickles (http://www.food.com/recipe/sweet-green-tomato-pickles-made-with-pickling-lime-440830). They stay crisp and are delicious on a sandwich. Sending thoughts and prayers for your family.

Hi Mavis, I am sorry to hear about your brother. I do pray for the best. I wanted to tell you what I do with green tomatoes. I make Green Tomato Relish. I am happy to share the recipe! ๐
Stephanie says
Green tomatoes mix well with apples in pies, muffins, and cobbler. My boys never noticed the added ingredient ๐
Thanks for the funny story at this difficult time. Prayers to you and your family.

I agree with Mrs. C about the fried green tomatoes. My favorites!

Living in Alaska, we grow and can food all the time (because we have to). Sometimes the only road to Anchorage is closed due to an avalanche, therefore, NO food in the grocery store. Anyway, once my friend ran out of home canned green beans (the only kind her 9-year-old daughter knew) so she picked some up at the grocery store. When she got home, her daughter helped her put away some stuff her Mom picked up in town. My friend could not find the green beans anywhere and finally asked her daughter where she put them. They were in the fridge! Her daughter had NO IDEA where to put store bought green beans!

Um, yes I can believe a 19 year old male would ask if eggs are sold separately only because I have a 20 year old son myself. Recently he asked where we keep the glasses in the kitchen? Really how long have you lived here? Thank you for the laugh. Peep’s in my family cry for fried green tomatoes ๐
Mavis Butterfield says
Ha! I thought only husbands asked questions like that. ๐

I totally get the Panera soup and applesauce thing. I was on high-dose chemo for 6 months and had many surgeries — I think all the anesthesia and other chemicals mess up the taste buds. Not just craving a particular food, but I developed many aversions to foods. And these changed frequently, so I recommend not stocking up on a lot of chicken soup and applesauce yet.
Sucky cancer is tough on everyone. I don’t know your brother, but give him a (gentle) hug from me. And give yourself one too, as caregiving is a tough job.
Marcia says
I’m very sorry about your brother.
The monkey boy comment cracked me up though. Cracked me up!
